Justin Fields and Co. have won back-to-back games, defeating the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions to improve to 5-8 on the season and keep their playoff hopes alive. Fields had a passing touchdown and rushing touchdown in Week 13, while the Bears’ defense stifled Jared Goff and the Lions’ offense.

Week 15 offers the Bears a chance to get their first three-game winning streak since 2020. Standing in their way are the Cleveland Browns and a resurgent Joe Flacco.

The Browns are 8-5 and squarely in a crowded AFC playoff picture despite starting four different quarterbacks this season. The 38-year-old Flacco turned back the clock in Week 14, throwing three touchdown passes in a home victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

With the New York Giants’ win versus the Green Bay Packers in Week 14, the San Francisco 49ers became the first team to clinch a playoff spot.

San Francisco had also taken care of business by topping the Seattle Seahawks 28-16 at home, which helped pave the pathway.

Here are the teams in the mix en route to Super Bowl LVIII:

What teams are in the NFL playoffs in 2023?

The 49ers are the only team after Week 14 to have booked a spot in the playoffs.

What teams can qualify in Week 15?

5 takeaways from Giants-Packers, Dolphins-Titans doubleheader https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/5-takeaways-from-giants-packers-dolphins-titans-doubleheader/525032/ 525032 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/rsz_levis-devito-getty-121123.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Two late fumbles came into play in both games. But when there’s a Will (Levis), there’s a way. And a Tommy DeVito.

The Week 14 Monday Night Football doubleheader saw the Miami Dolphins blow a two-possession lead late at home versus the Tennessee Titans to lose 28-27 while the New York Giants edged the Green Bay Packers 24-22 at MetLife Stadium.

Tennessee had kept Miami in check with the game tied 13-13 late in the fourth quarter, but consecutive turnovers — a muffed punt and Derrick Henry fumble — saw the Dolphins capitalize on both via Raheem Mostert touchdown runs. But the Titans proved their metal, scoring 15 points in 2:40 to cap off an improbable comeback.

Then in New York, Jordan Love led a touchdown drive after Saquon Barkley’s stumble fumble, but the Packers’ defense couldn’t hold on in the final minute as DeVito responded, ending in a Randy Bullock 37-yard game-winning field goal.

Let’s analyze both results with five takeaways:

Tommy DeVito inspires

The Giants’ season isn’t done just yet. With Daniel Jones out for the year, the rookie DeVito has stepped up and kept New York fighting despite some unfavorable circumstances. The 25-year-old delivered a clean game versus Green Bay, completing 17 of 21 passes for 158 yards, one touchdown and no picks while also taking zero sacks. He also rushed for 71 yards on 10 carries.

Like Jones, DeVito doesn’t have a great offensive line or enough quality receivers, but he has tremendous grit. Wan’Dale Robinson stepped up in the receiving department with six catches for 79 yards to provide DeVito an outlet.

Barkley had been held to around two yards per carry until he broke out two big runs late, but the latter one resulted in what could’ve been a game-losing fumble. He finished with 86 rushing yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns.

Jordan Love endures rookie pain

Rookie quarterbacks will endure ups and downs. Love was no different on Monday. The Packers have enjoyed a solid stretch to get in the playoff conversation, but the youngest offense (by average age) couldn’t capitalize on what looked like a win on paper. But that’s why the game is not played on paper.

Love completed 25 of 39 passes for 218 yards, one touchdown and one pick. He also lost a fumble. There’s no doubt he can become something in this league, but this dealt a major learning lesson for the youngster.

Dolphins’ offense without Tyreek Hill struggles

If Hill’s MVP case is to be strengthened, look how the Dolphins fared without him. After suffering an ankle injury early on and returning midway in the third quarter not at full strength, Miami lacked consistent downhill threats and Tua Tagovailoa looked average.

Raheem Mostert and Devon Achane thrived on the ground, but Tagovailoa completed 23 of 33 passes for 240 yards, no touchdowns and no picks while taking five sacks, including one on fourth down that ended the game.

To blow a 15-point lead in 2:40 at the end of the fourth quarter to a previously 4-8 Titans team with a rookie QB is egregious, especially with the contender status surrounding Miami. The Titans had just a 0.4% chance to win the game when it was 27-13 with 3:08 left, making it the second-most statistically improbable comeback since NFL’s Next Gen Stats started, via NFL’s Next Gen Stats.

Miami will need to take a hard look at itself because real contenders just can’t lose games like that.

Will Levis, DeAndre Hopkins show their resolve

Young quarterbacks need quality receiving options to aid their development. You look at Bryce Young’s struggles in Carolina without options while Tank Dell significantly helped C.J. Stroud, despite Dell’s inexperience. Levis, who fell hard in the 2023 draft, got help in a big way with the veteran Hopkins.

It hasn’t always been pretty for the Titans, but Hopkins’ seven catches for 124 yards and a touchdown was an absolute game changer. Levis completed 23 of 38 passes for 327 yards, one touchdown and one pick despite Derrick Henry averaging 2.1 yards a carry on 17 attempts.

Tennessee could’ve just called it a wrap once it became 27-13, but the squad didn’t let up and reminded Miami to always play until the final whistle.

How the results affect playoff picture

The Packers held the seventh and final spot in the NFC playoff picture, but now they’re one of four other 6-7 teams on the bubble. They now play the 6-7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home, the 1-12 Carolina Panthers away, the 7-6 Minnesota Vikings away and the 5-8 Chicago Bears at home. It’s still doable, but the margin for error is slim.

New York, at 5-8, is just one game out of that last playoff spot. But its schedule isn’t favorable, as the Giants will be away to the 6-7 New Orleans Saints and 10-3 Philadelphia Eagles before hosting the 6-7 Los Angeles Rams and Eagles to end the year.

Tennessee’s win puts it two games out of a playoff spot. It will host the 7-6 Houston Texans and 6-7 Seattle Seahawks before having a road game in Houston and ending at home to the 8-5 Jacksonville Jaguars.

Miami has an incredibly touch schedule that makes it tougher to land the No. 1 seed. It will host the 5-8 New York Jets and 10-3 Dallas Cowboys before having a road game at the 10-3 Baltimore Ravens and ending at home to the 7-6 Buffalo Bills.

5 takeaways from Cowboys' 33-13 win vs. Eagles on Sunday Night Football https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/5-takeaways-from-cowboys-33-13-win-vs-eagles-on-sunday-night-football/524796/ 524796 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/GettyImages-1838654489-e1702268176756.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The Dallas Cowboys just made the NFC East — and NFC — race all the more interesting.

With a 33-13 win versus the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football, both teams moved to 10-3 with the Cowboys putting extra pressure on their divisional rivals.

Dallas dominated the first half, leading 24-6 after putting up 10 in the first and 14 in the second. Dak Prescott accounted for two of the three scores with passing touchdowns while Rico Dowdle ran in the other.

The second half started off dicey for Dallas after Prescott’s fumble on a sack was returned to the house by rookie Jalen Carter. But the Eagles still failed to get going after that play in another blowout loss to a top NFC side.

Let’s analyze the game further with five takeaways:

Stephon Gilmore aged like fine wine

You wouldn’t think Gilmore is 33 years old after his stellar all-around play. The cornerback led Dallas with nine tackles, including a crucial fourth-down stop that really solidified its dominance in this one.

He also forced a fumble on A.J. Brown that was recovered. Brown had a great night individually, but this was a night all about Gilmore.

Eagles offense disappears again

The Eagles’ defensive unit has been struggling over the past few weeks, but the San Francisco 49ers put the entire league on notice on how to slow the offense, too. Philly needed this game to be a shootout to stand a chance given Dallas’ strengths on offense and its own lack of defensive power.

But the Eagles couldn’t get anything going on offense, with Jalen Hurts held quiet for the second straight game, including another lost fumble. Brown and fellow top wideout DeVonta Smith also lost fumbles. The unit’s top three players just couldn’t get it done in this one, which proved significant.

Is Brandon Aubrey the best kicker in the league?

It may be an overreaction, but there’s no kicker in better form than Cowboys’ Brandon Aubrey. And the sweet part? He’s still a rookie. The former professional soccer player has already made NFL records this season and is yet to miss, going 30 of 30 thus far.

And in a game where kickers were going to be pivotal, Aubrey, 28, became the first to make a 59- and 60-yarder in the same contest.

He also made all three PATs.

NFC East race remains in Eagles’ hands

Despite the loss, all Philly needs to do is win out the rest of the way and be the division winner, even if Dallas also wins out. It’s a likely scenario given the Eagles’ schedule lightens up after a brutal gauntlet. They play the New York Giants twice and have two NFC West games versus the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals.

Dallas, meanwhile, now has the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders on its plate.

But the 49ers and Lions are still near the top, so the conference has competitors outside of the NFC East. San Francisco currently is the No. 1 seed after Philly’s loss and holds the path if it wins out versus Arizona, Baltimore, Washington and the Los Angeles Rams.

Dak Prescott conquers a big game

The Cowboys desperately needed to win this one to silence the critics. They won a handful of games against teams below .500 but struggled or lost to teams above that mark. Now they can say they’ve conquered that feat and have a big win under their belt.

Prescott, who’s been mentioned frequently in MVP conversations, put up 271 passing yards on 24 of 39 completions with two touchdowns and no picks. The tests don’t get much easier for Dallas after this, but Prescott’s MVP case finally has something of substance.

Heated Patrick Mahomes has meltdown as Chiefs' epic go-ahead TD is called back in loss to Bills https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/heated-patrick-mahomes-has-meltdown-as-chiefs-epic-go-ahead-td-is-called-back-in-loss-to-bills/524811/ 524811 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/USATSI_22079715_168392271_lowres-e1702258119650.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The mood inside Arrowhead Stadium quickly went from jubilation to frustration on Sunday afternoon.

Down by three to the Buffalo Bills inside the final 90 seconds of regulation, the Kansas City Chiefs appeared to pull off one of the more incredible late-game touchdowns you’ll ever see.

On a second-and-10 from Buffalo’s 49, quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed a pass downfield to tight end Travis Kelce. After avoiding a few defenders, Kelce threw a cross-field lateral to wideout Kadarius Toney, who caught the ball around the 24-yard line and ran into the end zone untouched.

But the wild go-ahead score was called back due to an offsides penalty on Toney.

After the penalty, Mahomes recorded three consecutive incompletions, resulting in a game-sealing turnover on downs.

And the two-time NFL MVP then had to be held back by teammates as he yelled at an official on the sideline.

A heated Mahomes also slammed his helmet into the ground.

After Kansas City’s 20-17 loss, Mahomes voiced his frustration over the call to reporters.

“Obviously it’s tough to swallow, not only for me, but just for football in general,” Mahomes said. “To take away greatness like that, for a guy like Travis to make a play like that, and who knows if we win? But I know as fans you want to see the guys on the field decide the game.”

“It’s the call, man, just in that moment,” Mahomes said when asked what sparked his sideline outburst. “I’ve played seven years and never had offensive offsides called. That’s elementary school, we talk about it, you point to the ref, do all that different type of stuff and it doesn’t get called. And if it does, they warn you.

“There was no warning throughout the entire game and then you wait until there’s a minute left in a game to make a call like that, it’s tough. Loss for words, man. It’s tough because regardless if we win or lose, just for it to end with another game where we’re talking about the refs, it’s just not what we want for any of the NFL.”

Former NFL ref and current CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore said that officials are generally not supposed to be “overly technical” when officiating the line of scrimmage. But Steratore added that, in this case, Toney was “blatantly” lined up in the neutral zone.

The Chiefs were on the wrong end of a brutal no-call in last week’s 27-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers. With under a minute remaining in the game, a seemingly obvious pass interference call on the Packers that would have set the Chiefs up inside Green Bay’s 10-yard line went uncalled.

The Chiefs have now dropped two straight games, with their lead over the Denver Broncos for first place in the AFC West being trimmed to one game. Mahomes and Co. will look to get back in the win column when they visit the New England Patriots in Week 15.

Has an NFL game ever ended in a 0-0 tie? https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/chicago-bears/has-an-nfl-game-ever-ended-in-a-0-0-tie/335460/ 335460 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/USATSI_22079266_168392271_lowres-e1702254978579.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 It took more than two quarters for points to be scored in multiple NFL Week 14 games.

First, the Houston Texans and New York Jets were stuck in a 0-0 battle amid rainy conditions in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday. The Jets finally broke the scoreless deadlock when Zach Wilson hit Randall Cobb for a 15-yard touchdown just under four minutes into the third quarter.

Scoring wasn’t a problem after that, particularly for the New York, as the Jets rolled to a 30-6 win.

Then, the Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders went nearly all four quarters without a single score. But after quarterback Josh Dobbs was benched, backup Nick Mullens engineered a 13-play, 56-yard drive to set up a 36-yard field goal for Greg Joseph, who would give the Vikings a 3-0 lead with 1:57 remaining in regulation.

Those proved to be the only points of the contest, as Minnesota escaped Las Vegas with a 3-0 victory.

The Texans-Jets and Vikings-Raiders games marked the first time two NFL games were scoreless at the half on the same day since October of 1988.

But has there ever been a game that actually ended in a 0-0 tie?

What’s the lowest-scoring game in NFL history?

There have been 73 games in pro football history that ended in a 0-0 tie, according to Pro Football Reference. But it’s been 80 years since the last one, meaning there’s yet to be a scoreless tie in the Super Bowl era.

When was the last 0-0 tie in the NFL?

The most recent 0-0 tie came on Nov. 7, 1943, in a game played between the New York Giants and Detroit Lions. The two teams combined for nine first downs and 214 yards at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. The game featured 77 running plays and 16 pass attempts. There was no overtime played, as the NFL wouldn’t add the extra period for another three decades.

The last 3-0 game, meanwhile, came in 2007 when the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Miami Dolphins.

NFL Week 14 winners and losers: Jake Browning, Zach Wilson and Lions' contender status https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/nfl-week-14-winners-and-losers-jake-browning-zach-wilson-and-lions-contender-status/524629/ 524629 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/231210-goff-browning-wilson-getty.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Another Sunday, another set of surprises in the NFL.

In the early window, there were several surprising home winners, a divisional thriller and an overtime game decided by a punt return.

In the late window, a 3-0 final score and an elite AFC showdown stood out.

Here are all the winners and losers from Sunday’s Week 14 action:

Winner: Jake Browning and the Bengals have life

Even without Joe Burrow, the Cincinnati Bengals are still fighting.

The star quarterback was knocked out for the season in Week 11. And after two straight losses, Cincy has suddenly scored two straight wins while scoring 34 points in each game. Backup quarterback Jake Browning was solid yet again in Sunday’s victory over the Indianapolis Colts — 18-for-24, 275 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The Bengals are now 7-6, even with the Colts but in control of that tiebreaker. After losses by the Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans in Week 14, they currently hold the seventh and final AFC playoff spot (after Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET games). The fact that they are even in this spot without Burrow is impressive — and the credit goes to Browning, head coach Zac Taylor and an impressive group of skill players.

Loser: The Lions’ status as NFC contenders

The Detroit Lions haven’t looked like NFC contenders since their bye week — and Sunday only added to that narrative.

It started back in Weeks 10 and 11 against the Los Angeles Chargers and Chicago Bears, when it took fourth-quarter comebacks to escape with narrow wins. Then there was the uncompetitive Thanksgiving home loss to the Green Bay Packers, followed by a close win over the struggling New Orleans Saints.

That brings us to Sunday, when the Lions lost 28-13 against the division rival Bears. The defense struggled yet again, and the offense was unable to heat up in the cold Chicago air. At 9-4, the Lions are still in position to win the NFC North — but it could be a short postseason run.

Winner: Zach Wilson (yes, that Zach Wilson)

Getting benched for Tim Boyle apparently lit a fire under Zach Wilson.

The former No. 2 overall pick played arguably the best game of his career on Sunday in a 30-6 win over the Houston Texans. It wasn’t pretty at first — the first half featured 12 total possessions with 11 punts and zero points before a kneel down to run out the clock. Wilson came alive after the break though, finishing the game 27 of 36 for 301 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Games like this likely won’t be enough to keep Wilson with the New York Jets next season. But continued solid performances could earn him an opportunity elsewhere — and that’s all he can hope for at this point.

Winner: Ravens victorious in the game of the day

The only overtime game in Sunday’s early window was a thriller between the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Rams.

There were eight lead changes, including the decisive touchdown in overtime. Backup punt returner Tylan Wallace — filling in for the injured Devin Duvernay — went 76 yards on his third return of the game to give Baltimore the 37-31 win. He nearly stepped out of bounds and almost stumbled to the ground but maintained his balance to seal the victory.

The Ravens are now 10-3 and remain in control of the AFC’s top seed, pending the results of Monday’s games. The Rams, meanwhile, lose a heartbreaker and drop to 6-7 — just outside the NFC wild card picture.

Winner: Buccaneers keep the NFC South interesting

It’s not the most exciting division race, but the NFC South is certainly the closest.

After Sunday’s results — a Tampa Buccaneers win over the Atlanta Falcons and a Saints win over the Carolina Panthers — three teams are 6-7. The Bucs currently hold the tiebreaker over the Falcons and Saints while the 1-12 Panthers have been eliminated from postseason contention.

Baker Mayfield led the Bucs on a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in the final minutes to take a 29-25 lead over the Falcons. It took a fourth- and third-down conversion before the former No. 1 pick hit Cade Otton for an 11-yard go-ahead score. The three remaining teams still have two games left against each other — Bucs-Saints in Week 17 and Falcons-Saints in Week 18, both in New Orleans.

Loser: Kickers

Sunday’s games weren’t pretty for kickers across the league. Here’s a rundown of all the misses from the early slate:

  • Matt Gay of the Colts missed a 38-yard field goal and an extra point.
  • Younghoe Koo of the Falcons missed two field goals from 50 and 52 yards.
  • Blake Grupe of the Saints missed a 29-yard field goal.
  • Riley Patterson of the Lions missed an extra point.
  • Matt Ammendola of the Texans missed an extra point.
  • Eddy Pineiro of the Panthers missed a 41-yard field goal.
  • Cairo Santos of the Bears had an extra point blocked.

Rain in East Rutherford, New Jersey, could be used as an excuse for Ammendola. As for the rest, there were some really tough misses. Pineiro and Grupe were dueling at the Caesars Superdome. Koo was home at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Gay, Patterson and Santos were outside, in Cincinnati and Chicago, with temperatures below 40 degrees.

WINNER: Brock Purdy’s MVP case

Brock “checkdown merchant” Purdy completed 19 of 27 passes for 368 yards, two touchdowns and one pick, which was a deflection. He threw dots of 54 yards to Deebo Samuel, 45 to Brandon Aiyuk and 44 to George Kittle, with the Samuel and Kittle completions resulting in touchdowns. Purdy averaged a whopping 13.6 yards per throw as the 49ers swept the Seattle Seahawks 28-16.

He became the MVP favorite after a stellar performance in Philadelphia last time out, but this isn’t anything new. Purdy’s been doing this since last season. He has elite yards-after-catch weapons, but he has an elite arm, too.

LOSER: Scoring points

Let’s go through all the possessions before a point was scored between Minnesota and Las Vegas:

  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Missed field goal
  • Punt

  • End of half
  • Punt
  • Fumble
  • Punt

  • Field goal

The Vikings’ 3-0 road win versus the Raiders was the lowest-scoring NFL game since 2007. It also tied the record for the lowest-scoring NFL game in history, which has previously happened 59 times.

After Minnesota’s field goal came an interception, punt and fumble, with Las Vegas responsible for both turnovers.

Josh Dobbs was even benched for Nick Mullens after completing 10 of 23 passes for just 63 yards. Mullens went 9-for-13 for 83 yards. Aidan O’Connell for Vegas went 21-for-32 for 171 yards and the aforementioned pick.

LOSER: Chiefs’ WR department

It’s been a problem all season, but this time their hands were not the issue.

Kansas City thought it had the game-winning touchdown versus Buffalo when Travis Kelce lateraled his catch to an open Kadarius Toney for an epic score, but it was called back because Toney lined up with a foot offside.

The Chiefs fell to 8-5 on the year and are at risk of playing road playoff games with Patrick Mahomes, while the Bills moved up to 7-6 and finally won at Arrowhead.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid called it “embarrassing” that the referees didn’t warn them of Toney’s offside before the ball was snapped, so it’ll be interesting to see what stems from his comments, if anything.

Frank Wycheck, ex-Titans TE and ‘Music City Miracle' hero, dies at 52 https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/frank-wycheck-ex-titans-te-and-music-city-miracle-hero-dies-at-52/524650/ 524650 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/USATSI_14923617_168392271_lowres-e1702238806636.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,168 Three-time Pro Bowl tight end Frank Wycheck, who threw the lateral that started the “Music City Miracle” launching the Tennessee Titans‘ run to the franchise’s lone Super Bowl appearance, has died. He was 52.

Wycheck died at his Chattanooga home after an apparent fall where he hit his head Saturday morning, according to a statement from his family released through the Legacy consulting firm. His family said Sunday “with great sadness” that Wycheck was found Saturday afternoon.

His family will be following Wycheck’s wishes to work with experts for CTE research and on-going brain injury (TBI). Funeral services have not been scheduled yet.

“The Wycheck family appreciates the love and support they’ve received, but asks the public to please respect their privacy during this difficult time,” the family said in the statement.

Wycheck retired after his 11th NFL season. He got two concussions in the span of a month in 2003, missed six games, then finished the season with an AFC divisional loss in New England. He decided to retire despite still being under contract and wanting a Super Bowl ring.

“The physical stuff you can’t hide from,” Wycheck told The Associated Press in 2014. “If you have lingering effects and you go back into a game, from all my reading and studying on it … it could prove to be fatal.”

The “Music City Miracle” came with 16 seconds left in an AFC wild-card game Jan. 8, 2000. That TD return ranked fourth among the NFL’s greatest plays when the league celebrated its first 100 years in 2019.

Lorenzo Neal caught a kickoff and handed off to Wycheck, and he threw the ball across the field to Kevin Dyson, who sped 75 yards for the winning touchdown in the final seconds of a stunning 22-16 comeback victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Buffalo fans still insist the throw was a forward pass. Wycheck told the AP in 2019 he never had a doubt his pass was a lateral.

“Just flick it back,” Wycheck said. “That’s just the way I kind of jumped and threw it. And then I fell backward, and that was like the illusion of it.”

Tennessee then won on the road in Indianapolis and beat the Jaguars in Jacksonville in the AFC championship game. The Titans came up short on the final play in losing Super Bowl 34 to the then-St. Louis Rams in Atlanta.

Wycheck played 11 NFL seasons, starting in 1993 with Washington as a sixth-round pick out of Maryland. He was picked up by the then-Houston Oilers in 1995 and finished his career with the franchise that relocated to Tennessee in 1997.

He finished his career with 505 receptions, 5,126 yards and 28 touchdowns over 155 games. At that time, he trailed only Shannon Sharpe (815), Ozzie Newsome (662) and Kellen Winslow (541) for most catches among tight ends.

Wycheck played 137 games for the Titans and set a team record with at least one reception in 99 consecutive games. He also led the franchise in receiving for three straight seasons between 1999 and 2001. He was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2013.

The lateral for the “Music City Miracle” wasn’t his only throw. Wycheck was 5 of 6 for 148 yards and two TDs in his career, posting a perfect passer rating of 158.3.

Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said the organization was devastated to hear of Wycheck’s death, a man loved by many whose memory will be cherished. She noted he was always open making key plays and “even part of a Miracle.”

“Frank’s name was synonymous with Titans football,” Strunk said in a statement. “He was such a huge part of our team’s success both on and off the field. He embraced this community and fan base immediately, and everyone loved him right back.”

Wycheck worked in Nashville sports talk radio after he stopped playing. He also did color commentary for Titans Radio through the 2016 season. The Philadelphia native moved home, then relocated to Chattanooga this summer to be near his family. He leaves behind two adult daughters and three grandchildren.

Giants QB Tommy DeVito hilariously ranks Italian foods: ‘You can do anything with a cutlet' https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/giants-qb-tommy-devito-hilariously-ranks-italian-foods-you-can-do-anything-with-a-cutlet/524376/ 524376 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/AP23330836949851.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Below are the best Italian foods, capisce?

Giants quarterback and New Jersey native Tommy DeVito took some time to rank some of his favorite Italian foods ahead of Monday night’s game against the Packers.

Alongside TikToker Meals_by_Cug, DeVito was given five pastas and five entrees to rank in each category.

DeVito’s top five pastas are:

  1. Penne Vodka
  2. Linguine with clams
  3. Bolognese
  4. Ravioli
  5. Lasagna

When it came to entrees, things got a little more heated.

First, DeVito and Cug did not necessarily like some of their options, including shrimp scampi and veal marsala, which they said was “useless.”

However, there was no dispute on what entree was #1: Cutlets.

“You can do anything with a cutlet,” DeVito said. “Sandwich or dinner.”

DeVito, who grew up in northern New Jersey and went undrafted earlier this year, has embraced his Italian-American culture along with doubling the Giants’ season win total in his first four starts.

He has been nicknamed Tommy “Cutlets” for his love of his mom’s chicken cutlets, and Giants fans can’t seem to get enough of their hometown quarterback amid an otherwise disappointing season.

Ex-Jags employee accused of stealing $22M gambled away most of funds, plans to plead guilty, lawyer says https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/ex-jags-employee-accused-of-stealing-22m-gambled-away-most-of-funds-plans-to-plead-guilty-lawyer-says/524160/ 524160 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/GettyImages-1678668413-e1702005757896.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 A former Jacksonville Jaguars financial manager accused of stealing more than $22 million from the franchise has a gambling addiction and plans to plead guilty to resolve federal charges against him, his attorney said Thursday.

Attorney Alex King of First Coast Criminal Defense in Jacksonville released a statement on behalf of his client, Amit Patel, and said “approximately 99% of the funds misappropriated” from the team’s virtual credit card program were gambled away.

The NFL met with Patel in February as part of an investigation into his gambling, most of which took place on two prominent websites. The Jaguars subsequently suspended and later fired Patel, King said.

“Mr. Patel suffers from a serious gambling addiction, and in the spring of this year, checked himself into extensive, inpatient rehabilitation to address his addiction,” King said. “Mr. Patel’s serious gambling addiction does not excuse his actions, which he takes full responsibility for.

“Although incomprehensible to most, a gambling addition is similar to substance abuse, such that the disorder can stimulate the brain’s dopamine response much like drugs or alcohol do. It provides an uncontrollable urge to keep gambling despite the toll it takes on one’s life, and creates a willingness to risk more and more, despite the impact it has.”

Patel kept gambling in hopes of winning back his money and repaying the misappropriated funds, his attorney said.

Patel was accused of using the money to buy two vehicles, a condominium in nearby Ponte Vedra Beach, a designer watch for $95,000 and cryptocurrency — and to place more bets, according to the court filing.

He also allegedly used the money to buy sports memorabilia, a country club membership, spa treatments and tickets to sporting events and concerts. He also chartered private jets for himself and friends and lodged a retainer with a criminal defense law firm, according to the filing.

“While it has been widely reported that Mr. Patel used the funds to live an extravagant lifestyle, his modest residence was paid for mostly with family money and other money earned,” King said. “Mr. Patel did not use the Jaguars’ VCC to fund his lifestyle, but in a horribly misguided effort to pay back previous gambling losses that utilized the Jaguars’ VCC program.”

Patel, who worked for the Jaguars for five years starting in 2018, is charged with one count of wire fraud and one count of illegal monetary transaction in documents filed in U.S. District Court. If convicted, he may be required to forfeit property and assets purchased or funded with the proceeds, the filing states.

“Mr. Patel is deeply remorseful and apologizes for his conduct,” King said. “He loved working for the Jacksonville Jaguars and regrets his actions which have resulted in him both losing his dream job and damaging the organization. Mr. Patel remains in treatment and recovery for his gambling addiction and intends to seek ongoing treatment for the foreseeable future.”

Why are there 2 Monday Night Football games this week? All the details ahead of tonight's NFL action https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/why-are-there-2-monday-night-football-games-this-week-all-the-details-for-week-14/523729/ 523729 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/231206-mnf-getty.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Get ready for a double dose of Monday Night Football.

The NFL is giving fans an extra primetime game in Week 14, with two games airing simultaneously on Monday evening.

In South Beach, the Miami Dolphins will play host to the Tennessee Titans in an AFC clash. More than 1,000 miles north, the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers will battle it out in East Rutherford, N.J.

Why are there two games this week? And what are the broadcasting details for each contest? Here are all the details about the Week 14 MNF doubleheader:

Why are there two games on Monday night in Week 14?

There’s no specific reason for exactly why there will be two games on Monday night in Week 14. ESPN, in a press release, said that the schedule change is an opportunity to “transform a Sunday afternoon environment into a primetime window.”

How many Monday Night Football doubleheaders are there in 2023?

Week 14 will be the third and final MNF doubleheader of the 2023 season.

In the past, MNF doubleheaders were reserved for Week 1. That all changed last season, when ESPN moved the doubleheader to Week 2. This season, the schedule was expanded to three separate nights — Weeks 2, 3 and 14. The start times of the two games were staggered for Weeks 2 and 3, but the Week 14 games will kick off at the same time.

What’s the Monday Night Football schedule for 2023?

You can find the full Monday Night Football schedule right here.

All games for the regular season have been locked in after the Week 15 Kansas City Chiefs vs. New England Patriots game was flexed out for Philadelphia Eagles vs. Seattle Seahawks. The only MNF game that is to be determined is the wild card game, which is set for Jan. 15.

How do I watch Monday Night Football this week?

Packers vs. Giants will air on ABC and Titans vs. Dolphins will air on ESPN.

Joe Buck (play-by-play), Troy Aikman (analysis) and Lisa Salters (sideline) will call Packers-Giants, while Chris Fowler (play-by-play), Dan Orlovsky (analysis), Louis Riddick (analysis) and Laura Rutledge (sideline) will handle Titans-Dolphins.

Both games will be available to stream on ESPN+, where viewers can select a simulcast option to watch both games simultaneously.

What game will the ‘ManningCast’ show this week?

“Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli,” which features analysis and discussion between the Manning brothers and special guests, will be altered for the doubleheader. Both games will be shown side-by-side with the two former quarterbacks providing insight throughout the contests. Attention will shift to a single game when situations dictate, according to ESPN. The guest list for Week 14’s ManningCast is still to be announced.

6 players to watch in Cowboys-Eagles Week 14 Sunday Night Football showdown https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/6-players-to-watch-in-cowboys-eagles-week-14-sunday-night-football-showdown/523495/ 523495 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/rsz_dak-hurts-getty-12523.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Who wants control of the NFC East?

The division champion may very well be decided in Week 14 when the 9-3 Dallas Cowboys host the 10-2 Philadelphia Eagles.

Of course there are still four more weeks of action in the aftermath, but head-to-head fixtures are imperative, especially for two playoff contenders.

The Cowboys are still seeking their first signature win of the season having narrowly beaten the then-6-5 Seattle Seahawks 41-35 at home. Philadelphia, on the other hand, are coming off a blowout 42-19 loss at home to the San Francisco 49ers after grinding out some tough results.

Can Dallas make the NFC East — and the NFC as a whole — race more riveting? Or will the Eagles fly once again? These six players could very well decide the game:

RELATED: How to watch Eagles vs. Cowboys in Week 14 on Sunday Night Football

QB Dak Prescott, Cowboys

Yeah, here we go. Prescott has been in the league eight seasons. He’s battle tested. But how many decisive battles has he won? You have to give him credit for his numbers in the reverse fixture in November, but quarterbacks are ultimately judged by wins and losses, especially in the big games. If Prescott wants to legitimize himself in the MVP discourse, delivering a win in this one will most definitely help.

QB Jalen Hurts, Eagles

If the Eagles want to bury Dallas’ 14-game winning streak at home, they’ll need a bounce-back game from their star quarterback. Hurts posted his worst completion percentage of the season versus San Francisco, a game in which he often had to scramble and find his targets on last-ditch throws.

That won’t be a recipe of success against a sturdy Dallas defense that ranks seventh in DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average), a useful method in evaluating team strength. For comparison’s sake, the Eagles’ offense ranks seventh, too. May the best unit win.

LB Micah Parsons, Cowboys

Spearheading Dallas’ defense is star linebacker Parsons, who has logged 11.5 sacks, 13 tackles for a loss and two passes defended, among other statistics, thus far in 2023. They all factor into him being in the Defensive Player of the Year, a recognition not yet penned into his resume. But if he wants to keep building his momentum toward his first, there’s no better time than to stand out versus Hurts and Co.

LB Shaq Leonard, Eagles

Haason Reddick would’ve gotten the nod here due to his 9.5 sacks and game-changing abilities, but instead it’s the new man on the block. The Eagles picked up free agent linebacker Shaq Leonard following his release from the Indianapolis Colts a few weeks back. The 28-year-old is a three-time All-Pro, but injuries have diminished his strengths despite still being in his prime. How much can he boost an Eagles defense that ranks 21st in DVOA? Leonard having some gas in the tank left could be significant, though it shouldn’t be counted on.

K Brandon Aubrey (Cowboys), Jake Elliott (Eagles)

The last two meetings — dating back to last season — ended in a single-possession game. In the scenario that happens again — it very well could given their respective qualities — the two kickers in play could be paramount.

Looking first at Dallas, Brandon Aubrey has been perfect in his first NFL season. The 28-year-old former professional soccer player is a perfect 26 of 26 on field goal attempts, with a long of 58. But he’s 36 of 39 (92.3%) on extra points.

Jake Elliott of Philly is 21 of 23 on field goals (91.3%), with a long of 61. The seventh-year pro is 34 of 35 (97.1%) on extra points. Are either of them due for a miss?

Explaining the NFL playoff seeding tiebreakers and how they work https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/explaining-the-nfl-playoff-seeding-tiebreakers-and-how-they-work/523344/ 523344 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/231212-split-tiebreaker-getty.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all The end of the 2023 NFL regular season is fast approaching, but there’s still plenty of questions about the playoffs.

With four weeks to play, only one team has officially locked up a postseason spot so far: the San Francisco 49ers. But, of course, there are plenty of others clubs that are well-positioned to make it there.

Others spots, with so many teams on the fringe, could come down to tiebreakers. There will undoubtedly be squads with the same record after their final games — the AFC has six 7-6 teams and the NFC has five 6-7 teams after Week 14. Additionally, two divisions are tied and two are separated by one game. So, how is a tie broken between playoff teams? What about ties within a division?

Here’s a full breakdown of the NFL tiebreaking procedures:

How is a tied record broken between playoff teams?

Tied records happen basically every year as teams enter the NFL postseason.

Through 14 weeks this season, there are several ties that would need to be broken if the playoffs started right now. In the AFC, six 7-6 teams are vying for two wild card spots. The NFC has one 7-6 team, five 6-7 teams and two 5-8 teams fighting for the final two wild card bids. While there’s still plenty of time to sort it all out, ties will inevitably have to be broken.

Here’s the procedures for ties between two and three teams:

Between two clubs

  1. Head-to-head, if applicable.
  2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in conference games.
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
  4. Strength of victory in all games.
  5. Strength of schedule in all games.
  6. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
  7. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
  8. Best net points in conference games.
  9. Best net points in all games.
  10. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  11. Coin toss.

Between three or more clubs

  1. Apply division tiebreaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tiebreaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.
  2. Head-to-head sweep. (Applicable only if one club has defeated each of the others or if one club has lost to each of the others.)
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in conference games.
  4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
  5. Strength of victory in all games.
  6. Strength of schedule in all games.
  7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
  8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
  9. Best net points in conference games.
  10. Best net points in all games.
  11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  12. Coin toss

How is a tied record broken between division teams?

Division tiebreakers are broken in a slightly different way – and those procedures could be on display this season in several divisions. Three teams in the AFC South — the Jacksonville Jaguars (8-5), Houston Texans (7-6) and Indianapolis Colts (7-6) are separated by just one game. The NFC South is a dead heat between three squads, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-7) leading the Atlanta Falcons (6-7) and New Orleans Saints (6-7) thanks to a tiebreaker. Then there’s the NFC East battle between the Philadelphia Eagles (10-3) and Dallas Cowboys (10-3), which is even after Dallas’ win on Sunday Night Football in Week 14.

Here’s the full division tiebreaker procedures:

Between two clubs

  1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
  2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in divisional games.
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
  4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in conference games.
  5. Strength of victory in all games.
  6. Strength of schedule in all games
  7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
  8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
  9. Best net points in common games.
  10. Best net points in all games.
  11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  12. Coin toss

Between three or more clubs

  1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the clubs).
  2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in divisional games.
  3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
  4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in conference games.
  5. Strength of victory in all games.
  6. Strength of schedule in all games.
  7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
  8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games.
  9. Best net points in common games.
  10. Best net points in all games.
  11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
  12. Coin toss

3 takeaways from Bengals' 34-31 win vs. Jaguars on Monday Night Football https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/3-takeaways-from-bengals-34-31-win-vs-jaguars-on-monday-night-football/523200/ 523200 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/GettyImages-1831713841-e1701753144752.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 No, Joe Burrow did not somehow play for the Bengals on Monday.

Backup Jake Browning stood up to the task under the lights of Monday Night Football, helping Cincinnati compete with the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road.

Jaguars star quarterback Trevor Lawrence exited the game with an ankle injury late in the fourth quarter and didn’t return, setting the stage for Browning and Co. to win 34-31 in overtime thanks to an Evan McPherson 48-yard game-winning field goal.

Let’s analyze the game further with three takeaways:

Jake Browning keeps Cincinnati afloat

Don’t write off the Bengals just yet. They moved to 6-6 with the win on Monday, with Browning emerging as the focal point. It’s a quarterback league and many dismissed the Bengals once Burrow was ruled out for the year with a wrist injury.

But they’re still firmly in the AFC playoff picture, though the jury will be out on Browning for at least a few more weeks. He had a decent first ever start versus Pittsburgh last time out, which resulted in a loss. In that game, he completed 19 of 26 passes for 227 yards, one touchdown and one pick, while being sacked four times.

Against Jacksonville he was 19 of 21 at one point, then finished completing 32 of 37 passes for 354 yards, one touchdown and no picks while being sacked twice. He also ran twice for 22 yards and a touchdown, with the score being a QB sneak from the one-yard line. The rest of the team is still playoff quality, but it’ll come down to the 27-year-old to keep them swimming.

Trevor Lawrence becomes the latest significant QB injury

Lawrence’s rough ankle injury is just the latest in a bad year of injuries to starting quarterbacks across the league. Before the Jaguars star came Burrow, Anthony Richardson, Kirk Cousins, Aaron Rodgers, Daniel Jones and Deshaun Watson.

Richardson looked promising in his rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts while Burrow, Cousins and Rodgers could’ve spearheaded playoff runs for their respective teams.

Depending on the severity, Lawrence’s ankle could jeopardize what looked to be a promising season for the Jaguars. A win would’ve made them 9-3, catapulting them to the No. 1 seed late in the year. Instead, they’re 8-4 with a cloud of doubt lingering.

They also lost star wideout Christian Kirk early in the first quarter to a groin injury.

Kickers matter

Kickers are people, too. The game ultimately came down to two missed field goals, both of which could’ve ended the game in regulation. McPherson and Brandon McManus each missed one, though it was the former who avenged his mistake.

McPherson’s miss came toward the end of the first quarter, which was from 57 yards and hit the crossbar. He later converted from 54 yards prior to the winner.

McManus missed his from 48 yards out with five minutes to go in the fourth. He did make a 40-yard attempt to send the game to overtime, but that would’ve been the game-winner had he converted prior.

Why the Dolphins, not the Ravens, are the AFC's No. 1 seed https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/why-the-dolphins-not-the-ravens-are-the-afcs-no-1-seed/523217/ 523217 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/GettyImages-1243391839-e1701741622140.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,230 It’s quite unlucky to be 9-3 through 13 weeks and not be the top seed of your conference.

But the AFC is logjammed at the summit, with the Baltimore Ravens currently receiving the short end of the stick.

Lamar Jackson and Co., despite having the quality and numbers of a top-five offense and defense, need some pieces to fall into place to be the AFC’s top seed.

Despite being 9-3, the Ravens currently are the No. 2 seed behind the Miami Dolphins, who are also 9-3. The Jacksonville Jaguars failed to grab the top spot after losing to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football.

Why is that the case? Let’s dig into it:

Why are the Ravens not the No. 1 seed in the AFC?

Never let anyone say regular-season games don’t matter. Win or lose, they do. But it also matters who you win or lose to.

The Ravens not being the AFC’s No. 1 seed simply boils down to conference record. Baltimore’s three losses have come within the conference: Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

Miami has just two conference losses, which came versus Buffalo and Kansas City. Its other loss came versus Philadelphia.

Who is the No. 1 seed in the AFC in 2023?

Through 13 weeks, the current No. 1 seed in the AFC is the Miami Dolphins with a 9-3 record.

Will the Ravens and Dolphins play one another in 2023?

The Ravens could change their own destiny in the final weeks, as they play Miami at home in Week 17.

Who has the best record in the NFL in 2023?

The Philadelphia Eagles own the NFL’s best record at 10-2 through Week 13, having only lost to the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers.

NFL fans puzzled by Bengals' horrible trick-play INT vs. Jaguars https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/nfl-fans-puzzled-by-bengals-horrible-trick-play-int-vs-jaguars/523262/ 523262 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/USATSI_22035723_168392271_lowres-e1701748476555.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 It might be smart for the Cincinnati Bengals to remove wide receiver passes from their playbook.

After the Jacksonville Jaguars tied up the score on Monday Night Football, the Bengals broke out their second wide receiver pass of the game — and it went even worse than the first one they attempted that resulted in a seven-yard loss.

On the opening play of a third-quarter drive, Bengals quarterback Jake Browning threw the ball out to his left to wide receiver Tyler Boyd. After making the catch, Boyd looked back toward the opposite sideline and threw a pass to running back Joe Mixon.

The only problem was that Jaguars linebacker Josh Allen was standing right in middle of the passing lane, allowing him to make an easy pick.

That has to be in the running for one of the worst plays of the 2023 season.

The interception left NFL fans confounded by both the play-call and Boyd’s decision-making.

Not only had quarterback Jake Browning been a stellar 19 of 21 through the air to that point, but Cincinnati had failed on a similar trick play earlier in the game. In the first quarter, a pass from wideout Ja’Marr Chase to Browning off of a reverse lost seven yards.

The Jaguars ultimately converted Boyd’s interception into points, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence sneaking into the end zone on fourth-and-goal to put Jacksonville ahead 28-21.

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence suffers ankle injury vs. Bengals https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/jaguars-trevor-lawrence-leg-injury-bengals/523265/ 523265 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/GettyImages-1831704556-e1701755366109.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Jacksonville Jaguars star quarterback Trevor Lawrence suffered an apparent lower leg injury in Monday’s game versus the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Jaguars ruled it an ankle injury and deemed his return questionable.

After the game, the initial diagnosis seemed to be an ankle sprain with Lawrence set to undergo an MRI test on Tuesday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on Monday, citing sources.

With just over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Lawrence stepped back to throw but had his ankle stepped on by left tackle Walker Little. His right leg then bent back awkwardly as he fell to the ground.

The 24-year-old attempted to get back on his feet but couldn’t, slamming his helmet on the ground as he got down on one knee.

He ended up being helped to the locker room, evidently walking gingerly as EverBank Stadium fell silent.

Lawrence had completed 22 of 29 passes for 258 yards, two touchdowns and no picks prior to the injury.

C.J. Beathard is the only other active QB on the Jacksonville roster and replaced Lawrence.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson, son Josh, make history vs. Bengals https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/jaguars-head-coach-doug-pederson-son-josh-make-history-vs-bengals/523221/ 523221 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/USATSI_22035214-e1701742263993.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Like father, like son.

A father-son duo made history on Monday Night Football between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson got to see his son in action on the field, and not in the white and orange Bengals uniform colors.

Josh Pederson, son of Doug, made his NFL debut, making him the first son to play for a head coach father in the NFL since 1978.

The last such duo came in 1978 between John and John McKay with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Pederson, a 26-year-old tight end, was elevated from the practice squad earlier on Monday with fellow rookie tight end Brenton Strange inactive due to a foot injury.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Pederson attended UL Monroe from 2017 to 2020, where he recorded 99 catches for 1,191 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He went undrafted in 2021 but signed with three different teams in the aftermath. However, all teams — the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs — waived him before the 2021 and 2022 seasons started.

Pederson played for the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League in 2022 before his contract was terminated on July 6, 2023, so he could sign with Jacksonville a day later. He was waived during preseason cuts but re-signed to the practice squad.

5 takeaways from Packers' 27-19 win vs. Chiefs on Sunday Night Football https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/5-takeaways-from-packers-27-19-win-vs-chiefs-on-sunday-night-football/523008/ 523008 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/GettyImages-1829629984-e1701664237434.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The Packers may have just made the NFC playoff picture more intriguing.

Not many expected Green Bay to flourish immediately in the first season of the Jordan Love era, but the youngster just helped his team deliver a statement win.

Love and the Pack pulled off a major upset over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, winning 27-19 to move to 6-6 while the Chiefs dropped to 8-4.

It came down to the final drive with the Chiefs needing a touchdown at the minimum to go for two. Multiple controversial moments later, Patrick Mahomes and Co. ultimately fell short as the youngest team in the NFL impressed under the lights.

Let’s analyze the riveting affair further with five takeaways:

All love for Jordan

The Packers have had Love on the slow cooker the last few years, and it’s proving to be the right call. His first year as a full-time starter hasn’t been without shades of inconsistency and frustrating moments, but there’s a player in there.

Love at one point completed 18 of 21 passes as he had no issue bypassing a sturdy Kansas City defense, though the second half wasn’t always as clean. He finished the game completing 25 of 36 passes for 267 yards, three touchdowns and no picks. That was a bookmark game against an all-time QB.

Late penalty calls crush Chiefs

The aforementioned controversial moments had both positive and negative effects on the Chiefs. The first involved Packers safety Jonathan Owens, who hit Mahomes on his way out of bounds. The penalty, called a late hit on the field, moved Kansas City ahead 15 yards, though Mahomes appeared to be still inbounds.

There were also two late defensive pass interference calls that were not called in favor of Kansas City. The first saw Packers DB Carrington Valentine go over the back on Marquez Valdes-Scantling, which would’ve put the Chiefs in the red zone. The second was on the last-second Hail Mary, which doesn’t always get called but had an evident case.

The Chiefs have to feel hard done by the outcome as the game could’ve gone either way if they scored a touchdown via a penalty call. Now they’ll have to shift focus to the Buffalo Bills in Week 14.

Packers young receivers shine

Love hasn’t always had the benefit of health for his skill players, but the young group came to play in this one. Here’s how the receiving fared for the Packers’ unit:

  • Romeo Doubs: four catches, 72 yards
  • Christian Watson: seven catches, 71 yards, two touchdowns
  • Dontayvion Wicks: three catches, 43 yards
  • Tucker Kraft: three catches, 37 yards
  • Jayden Reed: four catches, 16 yards
  • Malik Heath: one catch, 15 yards

Doubs arguably had the biggest catch of the day on a risky 4th-and-one call.

It’s a promising group of youngsters who will be competing for minutes as they develop more chemistry with Love.

AFC might not run through Arrowhead

Seeing the Chiefs at 8-4 through Week 13 is a peculiar sight. The Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars all have fewer losses than them and that’s before mentioning teams with worse records in the AFC have already bested them, such as the Denver Broncos.

The chief problem may be the lack of quality receivers for Mahomes, which continues to be a prevalent theme in each game regardless of the result. Travis Kelce can only do so much with rookie Rashee Rice stepping up lately, logging eight catches for 64 yards in this one.

But the Chiefs are more vulnerable this year than they have been recently in the Mahomes-Andy Reid era, and that could come to bite them come playoff time.

Packers spice up NFC race

The Chiefs should make the playoffs, yes. But the Packers have suddenly put themselves in the playoff picture with four wins in their last five to be 6-6. That’s on par with the NFC South-leading Atlanta Falcons, Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints are both 5-7.

Can Green Bay do it? The upcoming schedule includes the New York Giants, Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers, Vikings and Chicago Bears.

The Tampa Bay and Minnesota games will be the deciders, but the other three matchups look promising. Keep an eye on this young team, as qualifying for the playoffs could do wonders in the long term.

NFL chain crew member dislocated his knee during Lions-Saints game https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/nfl-chain-crew-member-dislocated-his-knee-during-lions-saints-game/523016/ 523016 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/AP23337706061549-e1701662266169.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 A member of the chain crew at a game between Detroit and New Orleans was taken to a hospital with a dislocated knee that occurred when Saints running back Alvin Kamara was tackled into him.

Saints spokesman Doug Miller said Nick Piazza was in stable condition at University Hospital.

The game was delayed in the first half so physicians from both teams could treat Piazza as he lay on the turf along the Detroit sideline.

Piazza’s legs were taken out from under him after Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes pushed Kamara hard over the sideline, causing the running back to lose his footing at the New Orleans 18-yard line. Piazza writhed on the ground with Kamara looking on.

An air cast was placed on Piazza’s leg and he was carted off the field and to an ambulance.

Miller said the team hopes to have further updates on Piazza’s condition Monday.

This was the first time since 2010 that a member of the chain crew was taken from a Saints game at the Superdome. That season, Saints receiver Courtney Roby collided hard with chain crew member Al Nastasi Jr. while Roby was serving as the gunner on punt coverage during a game against the Cleveland Browns.

Nastasi hit his head hard on the turf and was admitted to a neuro intensive care unit. He ultimately recovered and returned to work with the chain crew.

NFL Week 13 winners and losers: Tyreek Hill's MVP case, 49ers' statement, Aaron Rodgers' return https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/nfl-week-13-winners-and-losers-tyreek-hills-mvp-candidacy-aaron-rodgers-unlikely-return/522874/ 522874 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/231203-deebo-tyreek-rodgers-getty.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Another Sunday, another chaotic slate of NFL action.

There were several thrilling games in Week 13, from the Houston Texans’ last-second win over the Denver Broncos to the Detroit Lions outlasting the New Orleans Saints. In a battle of heavyweights, the San Francisco 49ers blew out the Philadelphia Eagles in a rematch of the NFC Championship Game.

Then, of course, there was whatever happened between the Los Angeles Chargers and New England Patriots — not thrilling, but compelling for several reasons.

Here are all the winners and losers from Sunday’s Week 13 action:

Winner: Tyreek Hill’s MVP candidacy

Rain didn’t slow down the Miami Dolphins in Week 13.

Facing inclement conditions at FedEx Field, Tyreek Hill and Co. raced past the Washington Commanders in a 45-15 blowout win. The difference was 31-7 at halftime, as the second half was essentially just 30 minutes of garbage time.

Hill, a candidate for league MVP, further strengthened his case with a five-catch, 157-yard and two-touchdown performance. His two scores came on deep throws from Tua Tagovailoa, first from 78 yards and then from 60 yards. Hill’s game-changing speed was on full display as Washington’s defense was unable to keep up. With nobody truly emerging in the MVP race, could this be the season where a non-quarterback steals the award?

Winner: 49ers make a statement in hostile rivalry game

There was a lot of talk heading into Sunday’s Eagles-49ers game — and one team backed it up.

San Francisco was dominant throughout the contest, jumping out to a 14-6 lead at halftime and then breaking it open after the break to win 42-19. After getting blown out at the same stadium in last year’s NFC title game, the 49ers clearly had extra motivation this time. Deebo Samuel, who talked more than anyone leading up to the game, had a hat trick — three touchdowns (two receiving, one rushing) — to go along with 138 total yards.

The game wasn’t without controversy, though. 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw and Eagles head of security Dom DiSandro (!) were both ejected after a scuffle. There were several unnecessary roughness penalties. The two sides had to be separated on multiple occasions. If we’re lucky, this won’t be the last meeting between these NFC powerhouses this season.

Loser: Aaron Rodgers’ longshot chance at returning

Another New York Jets loss on Sunday should all but confirm that Rodgers won’t return this season.

Now 4-8 after falling to the Atlanta Falcons, Robert Saleh’s squad doesn’t have much left to play for in the final five weeks. The Jets face two playoff hopefuls — the Houston Texans (7-5) and Miami Dolphins (9-3) — in their next two games. Tim Boyle, filling in for Zach Wilson, was benched on Sunday in his second start as Saleh turned to Trevor Siemian. Neither player could put together more than a field goal drive in the 13-8 loss.

Rodgers, who was designated to return from IR this week, was always a longshot to play after tearing his Achilles on opening night. The former MVP is back at practice, but there’s no reason — at age 40 — for Rodgers to rush back.

Winner: Texans continue surprise playoff push

After a narrow loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, the Houston Texans got back on track in Week 13.

C.J. Stroud and Co. picked up a 22-17 win over Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos. The rookie quarterback went 16 of 27 for 274 yards and a touchdown, while the veteran was 15 of 26 for 186 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions

It was DeMeco Ryans’ defense securing the victory though, picking off a Wilson pass in the end zone with 16 seconds to play. Both teams were 6-5 entering Sunday, meaning Houston earned a critical victory for postseason positioning and tiebreaker purposes.

Few expected the Texans to be in this spot before the season — but upcoming road games against a pair of 4-8 teams (Jets, Titans) could lock up the Texans’ first winning season since 2019.

Loser: Starting quarterbacks in New Orleans and Pittsburgh

Injuries took out two starting quarterbacks on Sunday: Kenny Pickett and Derek Carr.

First, in Pittsburgh, Pickett exited with an ankle injury in the first half after an Arizona Cardinals defender landed on him. With the Steelers heading into a short week, it could be Mitch Trubisky starting against the Patriots on Thursday Night Football.

Later, in New Orleans, Carr was carted off late in the Saints’ loss after taking a brutal hit. Lions defensive end Bruce Irvin was flagged for roughing the passer, but Carr clearly got the worst of the exchange. He was placed in concussion protocol while also dealing with shoulder and back injuries. The Saints went on to lose the game, 33-28, to fall to 5-7.

Winner: Defense at Gillette Stadium

It was nearly impossible to score in Foxborough on Sunday.

With Bailey Zappe getting his first start of the season, the Patriots’ offense was shut out for the second time this year. On the other side, the Chargers mustered just six points on two field goals — both in the second quarter.

The Patriots actually outgained the Chargers with 257 yards to 241. But Brandon Staley’s defense made big plays when it had to — including two third-down sacks and one fourth-down sack. The six total points scored matched the lowest-scoring NFL game since December of 2018, when the Jaguars beat the Colts 6-0. New England is now 2-10 and in the mix for the No. 1 pick, while Los Angeles is 5-7 with an outside chance at a wild card run.

Report: Goodell wants Eagles' ‘Tush Push' permanently banned https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/nfl-rumors-roger-goodell-eagles-tush-push/522767/ 522767 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/GettyImages-1797512381-e1701558643807.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Whether it’s called the “Tush Push” or the “Brotherly Shove,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wants to see one thing on the popular Philadelphia Eagles play: a permanent ban, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported Saturday, citing a league source.

“It’s apparent this is going to be heavily debated among the competition committee made up of owners, general managers and coaches,” Russini wrote. “It’s important to note that there isn’t a single person from the Eagles organization on the competition committee. However, three of their divisional opponents are represented: New York Giants owner John Mara, Cowboys COO Stephen Jones and Washington head coach Ron Rivera.

“Though it will all come down to the voting, the most important opinion about the play may come from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. I was told by a league source that Goodell wants to see this play removed from the game permanently.”

In discussions around plays such as this, player health and safety spearheads the discourse. But Russini added, citing sources, that optics, not injuries, are leading the “Tush Push” dialogue.

“From everything I have been told by multiple league sources, injuries aren’t happening as much despite big bodies ramming into each other every week when the play is used,” Russini wrote.

The Eagles have made the play one of the NFL’s premier talking points because of its unheralded success. Even 49ers defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, a former Eagle, said this week that he wished he knew how to stop it ahead of Sunday’s pivotal game in Philadelphia.

The 49ers don’t have the luxury of waiting until next year. They’ll likely face the play Sunday — and maybe again come the NFL playoffs — and they’ll need their star defenders to stop it.

5 takeaways from the Cowboys victory over the Seahawks on Thursday Night Football https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/5-takeaways-from-the-cowboys-victory-over-the-seahawks-on-thursday-night-football/522581/ 522581 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/12/image-16.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all The Dallas Cowboys were able to hold off the Seattle Seahawks in a penalty-ridden game, defeating Pete Carroll’s squad 41-35.

Even with the Cowboys’ victory, the ultimate outcome did not seem certain throughout the game. With about 14 minutes left to go in the game, the Cowboys were down 35-27. But with some late drives down the field, and the defense finally being able to stop DK Metcalf, they were able to pull out a win against a playoff contender (sort of).

Let’s take a deeper look with five takeaways:

DK Metcalf had a career night

The Seahawks wide receiver doubled his season total for receiving touchdowns with 3 against the Cowboys, along with 134 receiving yards. His longest catch of the night was a 73-yard touchdown pass, when he slipped past two Cowboys defenders and ran all the way downfield with no one in front of him.

Metcalf even brought in a young Seahawks fan standing near the sidelines following his third TD of the night. After making the catch, Metcalf runs over to a kid in a Seahawks jersey and gave him the ball. What a great memory for the young fan, and the souvenir is sure to be worth a small fortune.

Each team helped the other with penalties

The Cowboys and Seahawks combined for 19 penalties, including six defensive pass interference calls, with each team having three.

Both teams also have up a 40+ yard gain due to pass interference, with the opposing offense ending the drive with a touchdown each time.

So I guess you could call them even.

The Cowboys continue their win streak at home

Their victory over the Seahawks was their fourteenth in a row at home. The last time they lost at home was during Week 1 of the 2022 season, against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

During the same time period, they are 6-7 on the road (not including the playoffs, where they went 1-1 last year). Given that the Cowboys are unlikely to win their division and make the playoffs as a wild card, their reliance on their home turf could be a major liability for their Super Bowl chances.

The Seahawks have a tough road ahead

The Seattle Seahawks have an even tougher matchup next week, at San Francisco, before taking on the Eagles in Seattle the week after that.

The Seahawks’ other games the rest of the season include the Steelers, Titans and Cardinals.

Call me pessimistic, but it’s easy to see the Seahawks getting two more wins this season, if that. Leaving them at 8-9, which probably leaves them out of a wild card spot in the NFC.

The Cowboys’ real test is still to come

Yes, this was the first time the Cowboys beat an opponent with a winning record since Week 2, when they beat the New York Jets, who were 1-0 at the time. However, they gave up 35 points to an offense that was struggling before Thursday night’s game.

The Seahawks’ last touchdown before DK Metcalf’s 73-yard touchdown in the first quarter was in the first quarter of their game versus the Rams in Week 11.

In their next three weeks, the Cowboys play the Eagles, Bills and then the Dolphins before taking on the Lions in Week 17. In Week 18, they play the Commanders on the road, depending on how well — or badly — they do in the next four weeks, the Cowboys’ final game of the season could everything or nothing at all.

The Cowboys needed to beat the Seahawks to keep their critics quiet, but the next three to four weeks will be the real test of how good they can be.

Von Miller's pregnant girlfriend accuses him of pushing her, putting his hands on her neck https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/von-millers-pregnant-girlfriend-accuses-him-of-pushing-her-putting-his-hands-on-her-neck/522384/ 522384 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/GettyImages-1763907748.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Buffalo Bills edge rusher Von Miller is free on bond after police say his pregnant girlfriend accused him of pushing her and putting his hands on her neck during an argument at their Dallas home.

According to Dallas Police, at about 11 a.m. on Nov. 29, officers were called to the 3100 block of North Harwood Street for a major disturbance. Police said, “The preliminary investigation determined the suspect, 34-year-old Vonnie Miller, and the victim got into a verbal argument and the suspect assaulted the victim.”

Miller, police said, left the scene before officers arrived and an arrest warrant was issued for assault on a pregnant person, a third-degree felony. Miller surrendered to police in Glenn Heights, Texas, Thursday afternoon and was freed after posting a $5,000 bond, according to our partners at KRLD radio.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by NBC 5 on Thursday, the woman said she and Miller were at home Wednesday when they began arguing at about 10:50 a.m. over when they would travel. When she said she didn’t want to travel on her birthday, she went to an office and slammed the door, which she said upset Miller and he told her to leave.

The woman told police that as she tried to gather some of her things he began to “shove and push her, all while telling her to leave.” She said as she pleaded to get her phone and laptop, he took out his phone and recorded the altercation as he continued pushing and shoving her toward the door. The woman said she told him to stop, and that she was pregnant, but that he kept pushing her, stepped on her feet and caused her to fall back into a chair. She said he then put a hand around her neck for 3 to 5 seconds before letting go. She said it was painful, but didn’t impact her breathing.

She said as she again tried to get her things, he grabbed her phone, threw her laptop on the floor and stomped on it. When she tried to reach down to pick it up, she said he pulled her by her hair, which ripped out a chunk and caused her to fall on the ground. She said she was able to start recording on one of her two phones and put it in her pocket before she said he again pushed her onto a couch and put his hands around her neck. When she got up she said she told him she was calling the police and he then left the couple’s home.

Detectives responding to the call said they saw minor abrasions on the woman’s left hand and bruising on her neck, injuries they said were consistent with applied pressure. Bruising was also found on the woman’s abdomen and left bicep. The woman also shared the video she recorded with investigators where Miller could allegedly be heard telling her to get out.

The woman, who told police she was six weeks pregnant, also shared a photo of a positive pregnancy test and text conversations with Miller where they were discussing the child’s due date and an upcoming doctor’s visit.

Police confirmed Thursday the woman was not transported to a hospital but was treated for minor injuries at the home.

According to the affidavit, the case is being forwarded to the district attorney’s office for prosecution. Neither Miller nor an attorney or agent speaking on his behalf have publicly addressed the allegations made by his longtime girlfriend.

Von Miller was transported to the DeSoto Regional Jail where he was booked, posted bond, and released.

DeSoto police released a statement Thursday evening saying: “Von Miller was released from the DeSoto Regional Jail after posting a $5,000 surety bond early Thursday evening. Miller was taken to the jail for booking and processing by Glenn Heights Police after he turned himself in to them Thursday afternoon in response to a warrant for a domestic violence incident that was issued by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.”

Miller is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Broncos and Rams. He grew up in the Dallas suburb of DeSoto and played college football for Texas A&M. He was selected No. 2 overall by the Denver Broncos in the 2011 NFL Draft, is an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time first-team Pro Bowl selection. He signed with the Bills before the 2022 NFL season.

The Bills are on a bye week and it’s unclear what Miller’s status will be with the team. NFL players accused of domestic violence are normally added to the commissioner’s exempt list and are not eligible to play while the accusation is investigated.

“This morning, we were made aware of an incident involving Von Miller. We are in the process of gathering more information and will have no further comment at this point,” the Bills said in a statement Thursday.

NBC Sports reported Miller was previously investigated for domestic violence in 2021 but was not charged.

The couple reportedly have two children together.

Dallas Police said the investigation into the allegation is ongoing.

NBC 5’s Newy Scruggs contributed to this report.

What the NFL's 21-day practice window means for Aaron Rodgers and the Jets https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/what-to-know-about-the-21-day-practice-window-as-aaron-rodgers-returns-to-jets-practice/522145/ 522145 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/GettyImages-1779083068-e1701287880497.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Aaron Rodgers has taken another step toward a potential return.

The New York Jets opened the 21-day practice window for Rodgers on Wednesday after he was cleared for “functional football activity.” Rodgers hasn’t yet been cleared for contact.

The four-time NFL MVP tore his Achilles just a few snaps into his Jets debut on Sept. 11. Rodgers then underwent an innovative surgical procedure in the hopes of being able to return in the 2023 season.

And less than three months after sustaining the injury, the soon-to-be 40-year-old quarterback was back on the practice field Wednesday.

So, now that Rodgers’ practice window has opened, what does that mean in regard to his potential return to game action?

What is the 21-day practice window?

NFL teams can use the 21-day practice window for players on injured reserve. The window allows players on IR to practice without counting against the active 53-man roster.

Once the window is activated, teams have 21 days to either elevate players to the active roster or place them on season-ending IR (the players could also be traded or released). So Rodgers’ practice window being opened doesn’t necessarily mean he’s guaranteed to return this season.

“For Aaron, what he will be doing in practice is no different than what he’d be doing on the field, with regards to certain drills and individual (drills),” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said. “Instead of throwing with staff members, he’s throwing with teammates.

“A lot of guys coming off (injured reserve) are usually not ready to play football. There’s usually still a little bit of a health concern there. So you use these 21-day windows to see where they’re at.”

“I promise Aaron is not going to do anything that puts himself in harm’s way if he’s not healthy to play,” Saleh added. “Aaron is very, very smart. That’s not something he’s going to put himself at risk for. With that said, though, he is driven. He is achieving things that have never been achieved with regards to this injury and it’s the progression with regard to rehab he’s on.

“And I think it’s remarkable what he is doing, but he is also smart in regards to how fast it’s going.”

Rodgers’ practice window is set to expire on Dec. 20, just days before the Jets’ Week 16 matchup against the Washington Commanders on Christmas Eve. Rodgers has previously said his goal was to return by mid-December.

But whether Rodgers actually suits up again in the 2023 campaign will not only depend on his health, but also the Jets’ playoff chances.

“It’s always been, first, am I healthy? Then, are we alive? Are we in it? Are we playing good enough to make a run?,” Rodgers said Tuesday on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “Can I step in and protect myself and play at the level that I’m capable of playing? But it’s health first and are we alive for the playoffs, second.”

While the 4-7 Jets are just two games back of the third and final AFC wild card spot, there are seven teams ahead of them who are also vying to get into a playoff position. And the Jets are trending in the wrong direction, having lost four straight where they failed to score more than 13 points in any game. New York’s latest benching of former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson, this time in favor of Tim Boyle, didn’t spark the offense in a 34-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Black Friday.

With the 5-6 Atlanta Falcons, 6-5 Houston Texans and 8-3 Miami Dolphins on the upcoming schedule, can the Jets manage to stay afloat and give Rodgers a chance to return this season? Or will the wait for Rodgers’ return last until Week 1 of the 2024 season?

Greg Olsen interested in Panthers' head coaching gig, report says https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/greg-olsen-interested-in-panthers-head-coaching-gig-report-says/521448/ 521448 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/GettyImages-1793663388-e1701141657301.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Could an ex-player suddenly go from NFL broadcaster to head coach for a second straight year?

The Athletic’s Joe Person and Richard Deitsch reported on Monday that former star tight end and current Fox analyst Greg Olsen would be interested in the Carolina Panthers‘ head coaching vacancy if he were approached by team owner David Tepper.

Carolina fired Frank Reich as head coach on Monday following an 11-game stint where the Panthers went an NFL-worst 1-10. Special teams coordinator Chris Tabor was named Carolina’s interim head coach.

Olsen, 38, spent nine of his 14 NFL seasons in Carolina, where he was a three-time Pro Bowler and a member of the 2015 team that reached the Super Bowl. Olsen, who signed a one-day contract to retire as a Panther in 2021, ranks in the top four on the franchise leaderboard in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Olsen has been a game analyst on Fox’s top NFL broadcast crew for the past couple seasons. But it’s anticipated that Tom Brady, who received a reported massive contract from Fox, will to take over for Olsen as the network’s lead NFL analyst starting next season.

Olsen, like Jeff Saturday last season, doesn’t have any high-level coaching experience. According to The Athletic, Olsen’s coaching experience is limited to his son’s Pop Warner team.

In November of 2022, the Indianapolis Colts hired franchise legend Jeff Saturday away from ESPN to be the team’s interim head coach after the firing of, coincidentally, Frank Reich.

The stunning hire was highly scrutinized, as Saturday’s only prior experience was as a high school assistant, and it ultimately didn’t work out. The Colts went 1-7 under Saturday and he wasn’t given the full-time role.

Will the Panthers, who are looking for their fourth different head coach since 2019, take a similar gamble with Olsen?

Can 49ers-Eagles live up to ‘game of the year' hype? https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/can-49ers-eagles-live-up-to-game-of-the-year-hype/521293/ 521293 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/web-231127-jalen-hurts-nick-bosa.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Much like NFL MVP, the battle for the NFL’s “game of the year” has yet to find a standout contender.

Sure, there have been thrillers. In Week 12, the Philadelphia Eagles came back to beat the Buffalo Bills in overtime and the Houston Texans were a doink away from sending their divisional matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars beyond 60 minutes.

Still, many highly anticipated bouts have fallen flat. Whether it was a blowout, injuries or generally below-average play from the two teams involved, the most exciting matchups on paper haven’t necessarily translated on the field.

Another “game of the year” contender is on the docket for Week 13 with the Eagles hosting the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of last season’s NFC Championship Game. Quarterback injuries for the 49ers took the air out of that playoff showdown and the Eagles wound up punching their ticket to Super Bowl LVII. Both sides appear eager for Sunday’s matchup, but can the game itself break the NFL’s trend of letdowns?

Here’s a look back at some of the top games from the 2023 schedule versus what actually transpired:

Week 5: Dallas Cowboys vs. San Francisco 49ers

After facing – and falling to – the 49ers in each of the last two postseasons, the Dallas Cowboys went to the Bay Area looking for some revenge on Sunday Night Football. They found none and were instead on the wrong end of a 42-10 beatdown as Brock Purdy threw four touchdown passes.

Week 7: Miami Dolphins vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Sunday Night Football scored another must-watch matchup when the 5-1 Miami Dolphins went to Philadelphia to face the 5-1 Eagles in their kelly green jerseys. Star wide receivers on both sides showed up with Tyreek Hill and A.J. Brown finding the end zone, but the Dolphins’ high-octane offense fizzled under the bright lights as the Eagles came away with a 31-17 win.

Week 9: Miami Dolphins vs. Kansas City Chiefs

German fans filled Frankfurt Stadium in Week 9 expecting a shootout between Hill’s Dolphins and his former team, the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Instead, they saw the Chiefs build a 21-0 lead and fail to score in the second half. The Dolphins got two touchdowns in the third quarter, but a mishandled snap from Tua Tagovailoa late in the fourth sealed the Chiefs’ 21-14 win.

Week 9: Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Hours after the Chiefs beat the Dolphins, the Cowboys and Eagles squared off in a contest that probably stands as the “game of the year” right now, at least among teams with realistic playoff hopes.

Dallas took a 17-14 lead into the half before surrendering consecutive touchdowns in the third quarter. A Jalen Tolbert touchdown brought the deficit to 28-23 and the Cowboys had first-and-10 at the 11-yard line with 27 seconds left. However, Dak Prescott and the offense went backwards as the Eagles held on for the win.

Week 11: Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens

One of the most intriguing Thursday Night Football games of the year ended with losses – even for the team that won.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews suffered season-ending injuries, and Ravens QB Lamar Jackson also had an injury scare. The Ravens ultimately won 34-20 to maintain control in the AFC North, while the Bengals’ season effectively ended.

Week 11: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Kansas City Chiefs

What’s (supposed to be) better than a conference championship game rematch? How about a Super Bowl rematch?

The Eagles and Chiefs met in Kansas City for one of the top-billed Monday Night Football games in recent memory. The Eagles made a strong second-half comeback, rebounding from a 10-point halftime deficit to win 21-17. However, the most important play of the game was a brutal drop from Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling that could have been a go-ahead touchdown in the final minutes.

Most intriguing matchups left in 2023 NFL season

Beyond 49ers-Eagles, here are some of the top matchups left on the 2023 schedule:

  • Week 14: Buffalo Bills vs. Kansas City Chiefs
  • Week 14: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Dallas Cowboys (Sunday Night Football)
  • Week 15: Dallas Cowboys vs. Buffalo Bills
  • Week 15: Baltimore Ravens vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (Sunday Night Football)
  • Week 16: Dallas Cowboys vs. Miami Dolphins
  • Week 16: Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers (Monday Night Football)
  • Week 17: Detroit Lions vs. Dallas Cowboys (Saturday night primetime game)
  • Week 17: Miami Dolphins vs. Baltimore Ravens

NFL head coaches fired: Tracking all the openings, candidates and changes in 2023-24 https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/nfl-head-coaches-fired-tracking-all-the-openings-candidates-and-changes-in-2023-24/521217/ 521217 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/231127-mcdaniels-reich-getty.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all As the NFL season winds down, change is inevitable.

Each year, a handful of teams make drastic changes — either to their roster, coaching staff or front office. But some owners act quicker than others, opting to fire coaches during the regular season.

There have also been several examples of head coaches getting canned in 2023, and a number of offensive and defensive coordinators have also been shown the door.

Who has been fired so far and who could be next? Also, what coaches could be candidates to fill these job openings? Here’s a tracker of everything you need to know for the 2023-24 NFL coaching cycle:

List of fired NFL head coaches in the 2023 season

Two head coaches have been fired so far this season: Josh McDaniels and Frank Reich.

The Las Vegas Raiders cut ties with McDaniels on Nov. 1 following a 3-5 start to the season. McDaniels, along with GM Dave Ziegler, were both fired less than two seasons into their tenures. The duo went 9-16 in Las Vegas after getting poached away from the New England Patriots, where they served as offensive coordinator and director of player personnel. Antonio Pierce took over as interim head coach, while Champ Kelly filled the interim GM role.

Reich only lasted 11 games as the Carolina Panthers’ head coach. The former NFL quarterback went 1-10 in Carolina after a 40-33-1 stint with the Indianapolis Colts. Reich was the first coach to get fired midseason in two consecutive years and his run with the Panthers marked the second-shortest head coaching tenure in NFL history (not including interim coaches). Special teams coordinator Chris Tabor was named interim head coach by owner David Tepper.

What NFL head coaches are on the hot seat in 2023?

While only two head coaches have been fired through 12 weeks, plenty of others are on the hot seat.

There are varying degrees on heated seats in a car, so let’s break up the coaches in a similar way:

Low heat

Arthur Smith, Falcons: Atlanta went 7-10 in Smith’s first two seasons and is now battling to win the lowly NFC South. If the Falcons don’t make the postseason, Smith could be the scapegoat.

Brian Daboll, Giants: Even after a surprise playoff berth in 2022, Daboll is under fire. The Giants have underachieved in 2023 while facing injuries and ineffectiveness, but the Giants’ last three coaches before Daboll were all fired during or after their second season (Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge).

Todd Bowles, Buccaneers: Bowles, like Daboll, made the postseason in 2022 — his first as Tampa Bay’s head coach. The team has regressed in 2023, though, going just 1-4 in one-score games without Tom Brady there to bail them out.

Medium heat

Sean McDermott, Bills: Firing McDermott wasn’t even a thought entering this season, but things have unraveled in Buffalo. McDermott, who went 62-35 in his first six seasons, has made changes at offensive and defensive coordinator in the last 12 months. There’s no one else to blame if the talented Bills don’t make the playoffs.

Dennis Allen, Saints: The Saints were built to win the NFC South this season — and it’ll be on Allen if they don’t get that done. Derek Carr hasn’t played like New Orleans expected, but Allen is doing little to save his job with key divisional losses to the aforementioned Bucs and Falcons.

Robert Saleh, Jets: Year three of the Saleh era has been a carbon copy of year two — strong defense, incompetent quarterback play and more losses than wins. Of course, there’s the caveat that Aaron Rodgers was injured immediately and Joe Douglas never signed a legitimate backup. If Saleh survives another year, next season will be make or break.

High heat

Bill Belichick, Patriots: The greatest coach of all-time can’t possibly get fired, right? Well, with the Patriots consistently looking unprepared and undisciplined, it’s certainly not out of the question. Belichick might not get fired, but there’s a very real possibility that he and the club mutually agree to part ways by trading him to another team.

Brandon Staley, Chargers: Despite finishing above .500 in his first two seasons, Staley’s seat has been hot for quite a while. Los Angeles is 2-5 in one-score games this season after blowing a 27-0 lead in the wild card round last season. It feels inevitable that Staley won’t make it into 2024 as the Chargers head coach.

Ron Rivera, Commanders: Riverboat Ron has been ultra-conservative this season, doing all he can to try and save his job. But new owner Joshua Harris likely wants to start fresh — and you can’t really blame him. Rivera has been .500 or worse in nine of his 12 seasons as a head coach, and he’ll make it 10 of 13 with one more loss in 2023.

Matt Eberflus, Bears: The best way to stay off the hot seat is to win games — and that’s something that Eberflus hasn’t done in Chicago. He went 3-14 in 2022 and hasn’t fared much better in 2023. With two top-10 picks likely on the way, the Bears could start fresh with a new coach and potentially a new quarterback.

What NFL coordinators have been fired during the 2023 season?

Firing a coordinator can help a head coach in several ways. Of course, the main goal is to shake things up and improve a struggling unit. But the hidden consequence is that it sometimes buys the head coach more time in his own role.

Here are all the offensive and defensive coordinators that have been fired so far this season:

  • Mick Lombardi, Raiders offensive coordinator
  • Ken Dorsey, Bills offensive coordinator
  • Matt Canada, Steelers offensive coordinator
  • Jack Del Rio, Commanders defensive coordinator

Who are the best NFL head coaching candidates?

NFL teams have a lot to consider when hiring a new head coach. There a several factors to consider, including scheme, culture, experience, age and more. Here are 10 of the top candidates to become head coaches in 2024 — names that you will surely hear when teams start interviewing in the new year:

Ben Johnson, Lions offensive coordinator: The 37-year-old Johnson passed on head coaching opportunities last offseason to stay in Detroit. He’ll likely have plenty of offers again this winter after an impressive season.

Bobby Slowik, Texans offensive coordinator: In his first season as an OC, Slowik has helped transform the Texans’ offensive. Having a star rookie quarterback obviously helps, but a young offensive mind (36 years old) from the Kyle Shanahan system will undoubtedly be in demand.

Frank Smith, Dolphins offensive coordinator: The Dolphins offense has taken off over the last two seasons with Smith as OC. Head coach Mike McDaniel is the play-caller, but Smith has obviously helped unlock Tua Tagovailoa and Co.

Kellen Moore, Chargers offensive coordinator: Moore’s first season in LA hasn’t been smooth. Still, the 34-year-old Moore is a rising young coach who already has several years of play-calling experience.

Dan Quinn, Cowboys defensive coordinator: Like Johnson, Quinn is going to have several opportunities this offseason — if he wants them. He’s in a great position with a loaded Dallas defense, so it would have to take the right team to pry him back into a head coaching job.

Ejiro Evero, Panthers defensive coordinator: Evero, 42, had interviews last year before moving from Denver to Carolina and remaining a DC. He could be looking for another new gig with the Panthers changing head coaches.

Lou Anarumo, Bengals defensive coordinator: It’s not often that your first head coaching gig comes at 57 years old, but that’s the situation that Anarumo is eyeing. He has transformed Cincinnati’s defense, which isn’t exactly loaded with stars.

Mike Macdonald, Ravens defensive coordinator: The Ravens are annually a top defense, and that hasn’t changed since Macdonald became DC in 2022. With experience working for both Harbaugh brothers, Macdonald is a future head coach.

Steve Wilks, 49ers defensive coordinator: Wilks went 3-13 with the Cardinals and got fired after one season. Then he went 6-6 as the Panthers’ interim coach before being passed on. Now he’s leading an elite defense in San Francisco. The 54-year-old Wilks has earned a long-term leash as a head coach.

Jerod Mayo, Patriots linebackers coach: Even with the Patriots floundering in 2023, Mayo is still a legit head coaching candidate — whether that be in New England or elsewhere. Mayo, 37, could take over for Belichick or jump at a different opportunity in the very near future.

Ravens' Zay Flowers hits Cristiano Ronaldo's celebration vs. Chargers https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/ravens-zay-flowers-hits-cristiano-ronaldos-celebration-vs-chargers/521180/ 521180 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/USATSI_21979975-e1701064604887.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Football, meet futbol.

The Baltimore Ravens came out on top versus the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night Football, and rookie wideout Zay Flowers broke out under the lights.

The second-round pick hauled in five catches for 25 yards and a touchdown that helped his team control a 13-10 lead late in the fourth.

Then, with a chance to ice the game in the final minutes, Flowers took his only handoff of the game 37 yards to the house to seal the dub.

And how did Flowers celebrate? By hitting Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic “SUIII” celebration.

Flowers lined up for a penalty kick under the goalpost, then slotted it to the right corner for the goal. He then ran to his left and spun in style.

Ronaldo, who now plays for Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr, has been doing the celebration for well over a decade. He’s done it with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, three giants of European soccer and soccer in general.

It wasn’t Flowers’ first eye-catching celebration on the night, either. After his receiving score, Flowers did a bouquet move based off — you guessed it — his last name.

Star quarterback Lamar Jackson comically wasn’t too enthusiastic about it, but he had to be ecstatic for Flowers’ two touchdowns being the difference-maker in a close game.

The win moved the Ravens to 9-3 in what is proving to be a tight AFC North, though the Cincinnati Bengals losing Joe Burrow for the year is undoubtedly a blow.

Los Angeles, on the other hand, plummeted to 4-7 as another frustrating year just gets worse.

Thursday Night Football was an important matchup of two top NFC teams, where the Seattle Seahawks were outdueled by the Dallas Cowboys in a 41-35 shootout.

The early window on Sunday featured seven affairs, with the Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers all picking up one-score wins.

It got spicier in the late window. The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the aforementioned NFC Championship Game rematch, a game that was filled with big plays and hostile moments. Elsewhere, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Rams grabbed victories.

Sunday Night Football featured the Kansas City Chiefs falling at the Green Bay Packers, which marked Patrick Mahomes’ first time at Lambeau Field.

Monday Night Football wrapped things up with the Cincinnati Bengals stunning the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road without Joe Burrow.

5 takeaways from Ravens' 20-10 win vs. Chargers on Sunday Night Football https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/5-takeaways-from-ravens-20-10-win-vs-chargers-on-sunday-night-football/521109/ 521109 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/GettyImages-1815692537-e1701059013317.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 It was a game billed as Lamar Jackson versus Justin Herbert, but defenses stole the spotlight on Sunday Night Football.

The Baltimore Ravens won 20-10 versus the Los Angeles Chargers and it came down to the wire.

The Chargers had a chance to score a touchdown and steal the win after a rare Justin Tucker field goal miss, but Herbert failed to drive his team down with Baltimore up 13-10.

Then rookie wideout Zay Flowers sealed the deal by taking a handoff 37 yards to the house.

Baltimore moved to a solid 9-3 with a resilient showing while the Chargers plummeted to 4-7 in what continues to be a bleak season.

Let’s analyze the game further with five takeaways:

Quiet night for QBs

Neither Jackson or Herbert looked the part as both defenses had their say throughout the night. Jackson completed just 18 of 32 passes for 177 yards, one touchdown and one pick while rushing for 39 yards on 11 attempts.

Herbert didn’t fare much better, completing 29 of 44 passes for 217 yards, one touchdown and one pick while rushing for 47 yards on four carries, led by a 37-yarder late in the second half.

Either quarterback could’ve gotten the dub for their team, but it always appeared to be in Jackson’s favor.

Zay Flowers continues to shine

If you are to nitpick on Baltimore’s flaws, it’s fair to point out the lack of high-quality gamechangers around Jackson. Jackson himself checks that box, but there’s not much else to point to. Keaton Mitchell’s emergence as an undrafted running back has been a great story, but they need more.

That’s where Zay Flowers, the Ravens’ rookie second-rounder, stepped in on Sunday. Odell Beckham Jr.’s name carries weight, but it no longer translates to the field. Flowers delivered with the game-winning rushing touchdown on his sole carry of the night while also grabbing the sole passing touchdown that helped Baltimore have a cushion in the first place.

Flowers caught five passes for just 25 yards, but his first touchdown made a vital difference.

Don’t celebrate hard when losing

Gerald Everett caught Herbert’s sole touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter, but his celebration may have come at the wrong time. Down 13-10 after the score, the tight end pulled out Ray Lewis’ infamous celebration.

The Chargers never scored again after that, instead failing on two fourth-down chances. If you have a sizeable lead and want to pull that card to troll your opponents, by all means go for it. But when the game — and on a more dramatic outlook, your season — you might want to think twice.

Chargers’ playoff outlook looking bleak

The AFC is, simply put, logjammed. A handful of solid teams will not be making the playoffs despite some good performances. The Chargers, though not always consistent, are on the outside looking in at 4-7.

They still have both divisional games versus the rising Denver Broncos to go along with the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs, both at home. But as we’ve already seen this season, home field hasn’t really mattered for the Chargers.

They’ll need to go on an improbable run and pull off some narrow wins to make it happen, but as the past has already revealed, they’re probably not built for it. The time has been up for Brandon Staley for quite some time.

Ravens’ elite defense can take them far

We can question whether the offense has enough to win in the margins, but the Ravens’ elite defense can definitely take them far. After all, defense wins championships. Baltimore is stacked with fast and athletic defenders who thrive in high-pressure scenarios.

That’s a great combination that can see them pull off some upsets against talented offenses down the stretch, but they’ll just need to remain healthy. You don’t hear much about the Patrick Queen and Roquan Smith linebacker duo, but they have a case as the best in the league.

NFL RedZone studio in California forced to evacuate during live broadcast https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/nfl-redzone-studio-in-california-forced-to-evacuate-during-live-broadcast/521099/ 521099 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2020/07/generic_nfl_logo_on_field.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Code red!

The NFL RedZone Channel studio in California had to be evacuated during the closing minutes of Sunday’s slate of games.

An alarm was heard in the background of the broadcast as host Scott Hanson informed viewers of the situation while the network showed live coverage of the fourth quarter of the game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is a first in my 20-something year broadcasting career,” Hanson said.  “We have an alarm going off in the studios of NFL Red Zone right now, in our studios here in Inglewood, California. We are being told we need to evacuate the building. We do not know the nature of the emergency. You can probably hear the alarm going right over the top of my right shoulder here, as it is something absolutely unprecedented for us.”

The Eagles were leading the Bills 28-24 with about 10 minutes remaining when Hanson announced that the building had to be evacuated. The other three games on the late-afternoon schedule were either completed or nearly complete.

“We have this game on, the closest game, the Philadelphia and Buffalo game, our control room needs to evacuate at this time,” Hanson said. “The studio in which I’m standing needs to evacuate at this time. We are all good right now. We’re remaining calm, but we are following protocols as I’m sure you all would at your places of work.”

As the game continued to air on the network, Hanson returned on camera from his usual seat on the weekly broadcast, saying he was told it was safe to remain where he is in the studio.

Hanson soon signed off as scheduled while the alarm continued to sound.

“As the emergency recording continues to sound here in the Inglewood, California studios here at NFLRedZone, we say thank you so much for watching,” Hanson said.

The reason for the evacuation had not been announced as of Sunday evening. Hanson made a post on social media shortly after the broadcast.

“Well, that was…. interesting,” Hanson wrote on X. “Alarm has stopped. Apparently all clear. Still waiting on details. Thanks for watching NFL RedZone week 12 !    One to remember.”

NFL Week 12 winners and losers: Eagles top Bills, Mac Jones benched (again), Tommy DeVito celebrates https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/nfl-week-12-winners-and-losers-eagles-top-bills-mac-jones-benched-again-tommy-devito-celebrates/521068/ 521068 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/web-231126-hurts-jones-devito-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The NFL’s Thanksgiving slate on Thursday and Friday was a biz of a snoozer thanks to four lopsided games and all of that tryptophan in the turkey.

The Detroit Lions looked like the Lions of old in a loss to the Green Bay Packers, the Dallas Cowboys’ rout of the Washington Commanders will be best remembered for Dolly Parton’s halftime show, the Seattle Seahawks were no match for the San Francisco 49ers, and the New York Jets introduced the “Fail Mary” into their NFL vernacular during a loss to the Miami Dolphins in the league’s first Black Friday game.

On Sunday, the 11-game slate featured much more competitive matchups and intriguing finishes.

Here are all the winners and losers from Sunday’s afternoon action in the NFL…

Winner: The 10-1 Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles are off to a 10-1 start for the second consecutive season. Only two other teams in the Super Bowl era have done that in back-to-back years and both won the championship.

But the Eagles’ tenth victory of the season – a 37-34 win over the Buffalo Bills – didn’t come easy.

The Eagles trailed by 10 at the start of the fourth quarter before Jalen Hurts’ 15-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith, Josh Allen’s interception, and Hurts’ 29-yard touchdown pass to Olamide Zaccheaus put the Eagles up 28-24 with 11:07 remaining. The Bills regained the lead when Allen found Gabe Davis for a seven-yard touchdown with 1:52 left. Eagles kicker Jake Elliott then converted a 59-yard field goal in less than ideal conditions to even the score at 31-31 with 20 seconds left.

The Eagles trailed again in overtime after a Bills field goal on the opening possession. But Hurts called a nine-play, 75-yard drive with a walk-off 12-yard touchdown run.

Loser: Josh Allen, the Buffalo Bills and their playoff chances

Josh Allen is now 0-6 in overtime games.

A miscommunication between Allen and Gabe Davis in OT cost the Bills a potential game-winning touchdown, with the team having to settle for a field goal. The Buffalo defense was then unable to prevent the Eagles from reaching the end zone as the Bills dropped to 6-6. The Bills now enter their bye week trailing the 6-5 Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos in the race for the seventh and final AFC playoff spot.

Oh and the Bills’ next two matchups are in Kansas City and home against Dallas.

Winner: Josh Allen, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the crossbar

The Jacksonville Jaguars held on for a 24-21 win over the Houston Texans by a matter of inches. And it was linebacker Josh Allen who helped create that gap.

Allen sacked Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud twice on the final drive, the first for a loss of 15 yards and the other, during which he combined with Travon Walker, for a loss of nine. The Texans ultimately ended up attempting a potential game-tying 58-yard field goal with 34 seconds remaining and Matt Ammendola’s kick hit the crossbar to end the game.

With the win, the Jaguars remained atop the AFC South at 8-3 and avenged their 20-point loss to the now 6-5 Texans earlier this season.

Loser: Matt Ammendola

A potential C.J. Stroud comeback story was a few pages and a couple of inches short.

The Houston Texans rookie quarterback nearly helped erase a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit but Matt Ammendola’s 58-yard field goal attempt with roughly 30 seconds remaining struck the crossbar to give the Jacksonville Jaguars a 24-21 victory.

Ammendola also missed a 50-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter. Not exactly a chip shot on either attempt by any means but missing both proved to be the difference between winning and losing…and between first place and second place. Stroud threw for over 300 passing yards for the fourth-straight game and nearly orchestrated a fourth-quarter comeback.

Winner: First-place Atlanta Falcons?

Only one team in the NFC South was victorious in Week 12: the Atlanta Falcons.

That doesn’t mean it was a pretty win, but it was a win, nonetheless. And it put the Falcons in first place with a record of just 5-6.

The Falcons snapped a three-game losing streak with a 24-15 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Jessie Bates III had a 92-yard interception return to put the Falcons on the board late in the first quarter. Bijan Robinson’s two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving, helped the Falcons take a 21-12 lead. Quarterback Desmond Ridder got the start but threw two interceptions in Saints territory, one of which was in the red zone. Still, he did enough to get the win.

Loser: Jake Browning and the Cincinnati Bengals

Such is life without Joe Burrow.

The Bengals offense struggled under Burrow’s replacement Jake Browning in a 16-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, mustering just 222 total yards. Browning, who took over as starting quarterback with Burrow set for season-ending wrist surgery, competed 19 of 26 passes for 227 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Following Browning’s third-quarter red zone interception, the Steelers went down field for a go-ahead touchdown. The ensuing Bengals possession then came to an end when forced to punt after Browning ran into a sack. Browning very much resembled a backup quarterback, but it wasn’t exactly a banner day for the Bengals defense.

Cincinnati was outscored by one of the lowest-scoring offenses in the league as the Steelers had more than 400 yards of total offense for the first time in 58 games.

Winner: Scott Hanson and the NFL RedZone crew

The show must go on for the NFL RedZone broadcast.

Even as an emergency alarm was sounding and the building was being evacuated, host Scott Hanson continued to deliver live football action to fans watching at home. As the network aired a live feed of the fourth quarter between the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills, Hanson informed viewers that an alarm had sounded in the studio and the crew was instructed to evacuate the building in what he called an “unprecedented” incident. He ultimately remained in place and completed the broadcast as the alarm sounded in the background throughout.

Loser: Mac Jones

Mac Jones starts games but doesn’t always finish them.

For the fourth time this season, and for the second-consecutive game, the New England Patriots quarterback was replaced during a game by backup Bailey Zappe. Bill Belichick elected to give Jones the start Sunday despite having benched him late in the fourth quarter of the Patriots’ Week 10 loss after Jones threw an interception that thwarted a potential go-ahead drive.

Jones then struggled in the first half on Sunday against the New York Giants, throwing two interceptions as the Patriots were shut out. His second pick, which came as the Patriots were approaching the red zone, set up the Giants’ only touchdown of the half. Jones attempted to throw the ball rather than take a sack and the pass went directly to Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke, who returned it to the Patriots’ 26-yard line.

Jones was replaced at the start of the second half by Zappe, who completed his first six passes during an 11-play, 60-yard drive that was capped with Rhamondre Stevenson’s seven-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 7-7. But it would be the only points the Pats put on the scoreboard as Chad Ryland missed what would have been a game-tying 35-yard field goal with seconds remaining in a 10-7 loss.

Winner: Tommy DeVito and his touchdown celebration

Is there a better touchdown celebration in the NFL? Fuhgeddaboudit!

Tommy DeVito has given the New York Giants reason to celebrate over the last two weeks. The undrafted rookie free agent and New Jersey native earned his first career victory last week and was named the NFL’s rookie of the week. This week he made his first home start, playing just 12 miles from the New Jersey house where the 25-year-old still lives with his parents.

DeVito completed 17 of 25 passes, including a 12-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Hodgins in the Giants’ 10-7 victory over the New England Patriots. He and his family celebrated the occasion and the touchdown with what has become DeVito’s trademark Italian “finger purse” hand gesture.

5 winners, losers from Dolphins' 34-13 win vs. Jets on Black Friday https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/5-winners-losers-from-dolphins-34-13-win-vs-jets-on-black-friday/520816/ 520816 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/231124-mostert-saleh-getty.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Black Friday is usually about finding discounts. This year, it was about watching football.

In the NFL’s first ever Black Friday game, the Miami Dolphins dismantled the New York Jets in a largely uncompetitive contest.

The AFC East leaders improve to 8-3 after the 34-13 win, while the Jets fall to 4-7 following their fourth straight loss.

Here are five winners and losers from the Week 12 Dolphins-Jets game:

Winner: Dolphins keep winning games they should win

Many are dubious of the Dolphins as a real Super Bowl contender, thanks in large part to their results against certain opponents.

Through 11 games, Miami’s eight wins have all come against teams that are .500 or worse. The Broncos (5-5) are the best of the bunch, but other wins include the Raiders (5-6), Chargers (4-6), Jets (4-7), Giants (3-8), Patriots twice (2-8) and Panthers (1-9). On the other side, Miami’s three losses have come against the Bills (6-5), Chiefs (7-3) and Eagles (9-1).

Now, defeating lowly opponents isn’t exactly a bad thing. You’re supposed to beat up on those squads, and that’s exactly what Mike McDaniel’s team has done. But until the Dolphins handle their business against a top tier foe, questions will linger.

The Dolphins’ next chance against a winning team will come in Week 16 when they host the Cowboys. The next three weeks — against the Commanders (4-8), Titans (3-7) and Jets (4-7) — likely won’t teach us much.

Loser: The Joe Douglas-Robert Saleh regime

Since Joe Douglas took over as Jets general manager in 2019, the club is just 24-53 with no postseason appearances. Since Robert Saleh was hired as head coach in 2021, they’re 15-30. Safe to say their seats could be hot.

One could argue that they both deserve a pass after Aaron Rodgers‘ opening-drive injury this season. But that doesn’t completely excuse them of how the ensuing two months have gone.

Douglas was content to roll with Zach Wilson as Rodgers’ only backup, and that clearly cost the Jets a chance at a serious run. Saleh, meanwhile, vigorously stood by Wilson before finally benching him for Tim Boyle — who struggled in his first start on Friday. The Rodgers injury likely buys this duo another year at the helm, but it’s almost make or break time for Douglas and Saleh.

Winner: Raheem Mostert gets better with age

Running backs are usually past their primes once they reach 30 years old. But Raheem Mostert appears to be aging better than any running back in recent memory.

The 31-year-old veteran had 94 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries in Friday’s win. That gives him 13 rushing scores on the year, which leads the NFL. His 785 rushing yards are second in the league, only trailing 49ers star Christian McCaffrey (939).

Loser: MetLife Stadium’s turf claims another victim

Rodgers isn’t the only player to suffer a devastating injury at MetLife Stadium this season. On Friday, Dolphins pass-rusher Jaelan Phillips was carted off and immediately ruled out with a non-contact Achilles injury.

Phillips, 24, has had a breakout season for the Dolphins. He had a sack and three tackles for loss against the Jets before exiting, which gives him 6.5 sacks and seven TFLs on the year. It appears as though Vic Fangio’s defense will have to move forward without the young star, though.

Winner: Zach Wilson (?!)

The Jets benched Zach Wilson for Week 12… so how exactly is he a winner?

Well, it’s because the guy who replaced him didn’t do much to justify the decision. Boyle, a 29-year-old QB making his fourth career start, went 27 of 38 for 179 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and two fumbles (none lost). His pick-6 at the end of the first half erased all hope for the Jets, who couldn’t mount any solid drives until the game was out of reach.

So, while Wilson was demoted to third-string, he comes out of Friday as a winner simply because his replacement wasn’t an improvement over him.

Social media roasts Jets after failed Hail Mary leads to Dolphins touchdown https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/social-media-roasts-jets-after-failed-hail-mary-leads-to-dolphins-touchdown/520795/ 520795 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/231124-holland-jets-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 It’s been a Black Friday to forget for the New York Jets.

In the NFL’s first ever game on the day after Thanksgiving, fans were treated to some bonus football.

The first half ended with a historic play, of sorts, when the Jevon Holland intercepted Tim Boyle’s Hail Mary pass and returned it 99 yards for a Miami Dolphins touchdown.

Here’s the play, which you have to see to believe:

The Jets got the ball back with two seconds left in the half after intercepting Tua Tagovailoa. But the opportunity to steal some points quickly turned in the other direction, as the Dolphins instead took a 17-6 lead into the break.

Boyle, making his first start in place of Zach Wilson, finished the first half 7 of 11 for just 35 yards.

Understandably, social media had plenty of takes after the unbelievable play. Here are some of the best reactions:

Amazon and NFL hoping to establish a tradition with first Black Friday game https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/amazon-and-nfl-hoping-to-establish-a-tradition-with-first-black-friday-game/520757/ 520757 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/231124-amazon-tnf-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 It is not a stretch to say the Black Friday game between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets is Amazon’s Super Bowl.

Not only does it mean an additional game on Prime Video that Amazon hopes to make into a yearly tradition, but it comes on the busiest shopping day of the year.

“When we talked with the NFL, this is a perfect marriage. Black Friday is a huge event for us every year. We’re really putting everything behind this,” Prime Video Vice President Jay Marine said.

Hans Schroeder, the executive vice president of NFL Media, said the league had been exploring the possibility of adding a game on Black Friday for a while. The Thanksgiving Day tripleheader has been among the most-watched games during the regular season for the past two years.

Adding a Black Friday game gives the NFL another day to take over. Combine it with it airing on Amazon, and it was a match made in football and commerce heaven.

“It’s an opportunity for us to continue to innovate with Amazon. I think some of what they’ve done this year on Prime Vision is exciting with seeing that intersection of data and AI predictability and taking fans deeper inside of X’s and O’s,” Schroeder said. “I think the viewing experience will feel a little bit different and unique for that day and appropriately. We’re excited about that.”

Even though Amazon will highlight some deals and promotions throughout the day, it will not feel like Home Shopping Network meets a football game.

Marine said some of the Black Friday deals will be highlighted during commercials, and there will be a QR code to scan and shop during the game.

There will be one major promotion per quarter and other deals during the pregame, postgame and halftime shows.

The game will be available for all fans to stream for free. According to Nielsen, the most-viewed Amazon game came in Week 2 this season when the Philadelphia Eagles hosted the Minnesota Vikings.

NFL games are averaging 17.1 million viewers through 11 weeks, which is a 6% increase over last season. The league remains on track for its highest viewership since 2015.

Amazon also will air a concert by Garth Brooks following the game.

“I’m fascinated to see how it plays out in terms of the Amazon component because they’ve taken it out from behind the paywall. So you can watch the game, and if you want to do additional Christmas shopping alongside the game, you will be able to do that. So this is kind of a brand new frontier,” said Al Michaels, who will call the game with Kirk Herbstreit and Kaylee Hartung. “I’m curious to find out how this works. I mean, there’s a chance in my mind that this could be spectacular.”

With three games on Thanksgiving, a Black Friday matchup, three windows on Sunday and a Monday night game, half of the week’s 16 matchups need national appeal.

During Christmas last year, the league showed it can schedule games on four days and spread the wealth with matchups across all of its media partners.

All 32 teams are playing this week, with 10 of the 16 games being a matchup between teams in the same division.

While college football has taken center stage in the past on the day after Thanksgiving, the 3 p.m. Eastern kickoff still gives colleges an early window and prime time. More of the college rivalry games on Thanksgiving weekend have been on Saturday.

Even though it will be Tim Boyle at quarterback for the Jets instead of Aaron Rodgers, the AFC East-leading Dolphins have ascended to national prominence with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wide receiver Tyreek Hill leading the offense.

For the first time ever, there will be an NFL matchup on Black Friday. The contest will pin AFC East rivals against one another as the New York Jets host the Miami Dolphins.

The Jets are riding a three-game losing streak and will have a new quarterback under center for the game. The team sent Zach Wilson to the bench during its latest loss against the Buffalo Bills and is handing the keys to Tim Boyle for his fourth career NFL start.

On the other side, the Dolphins hold the division lead but are looking to reignite an offense that took the league by storm at the start of the season. They have only scored more than 21 points once in their last four games and are on the heels of a 20-13 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Who will come out on top in the historic Black Friday showdown? Here is how you can watch Dolphins-Jets.

Who is playing in the Black Friday NFL game?

The Dolphins and Jets will face off in the NFL’s inaugural Black Friday game.

The Cincinnati Bengals volunteered to host an annual Black Friday game, and NFL executive Mike North said on “The Adam Schefter Podcast” that the Jets were another team eager to make it a yearly tradition. However, North said that the league was not looking to commit to a permanent Black Friday host.

When is the Dolphins vs. Jets Black Friday NFL game?

The Dolphins will visit the Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.Y., on Friday, Nov. 25.

NFL's look changing as more women move into prominent roles at teams across league https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/nfls-look-changing-as-more-women-move-into-prominent-roles-at-teams-across-league/520317/ 520317 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/231121-catherine-Raiche-AP.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Catherine Raîche can remember hearing the doubt and disbelief over the phone when she said she was a college scout for the NFL.

In her first role with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019, Raîche would regularly reach out to schools across the country to inquire about prospective players. More than once, her requests were met with suspicion.

“I was asked to send a picture of my business card because they didn’t believe I was a scout,” said Raîche, currently Cleveland Browns assistant general manager and vice president of football operations. “That happened multiple times, and it’s not like it was 10 years ago.”

Those awkward conversations and questions come far less frequently these days.

Now the highest-ranking female executive in league history, Raîche is one of the vanguard of women helping bring overdue balance to hiring in the NFL and opening doors in a world once ruled exclusively by men. After years of slow, sometimes sideways steps toward progress, record numbers of women are reshaping America’s most popular sport.

But despite the dramatic improvements in less than a decade, the NFL has more work to do as women still lag in equal representation and the league faces allegations ranging from gender discrimination to toxic workplace cultures.

The Browns, who have been at the forefront of creating positive growth for women, were also widely condemned last season for signing quarterback Deshaun Watson to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract despite accusations of sexual misconduct and harassment brought against him by two dozen women.

Though Watson served an 11-game league suspension, his connection to Cleveland perhaps underscores deeper issues that merit attention.

“We’ve only scratched the surface so far, but when you zoom out and look at the progress the NFL has seen in the last seven years compared to its first 100 years of existence, it is remarkable,” said Sam Rapoport, the league’s senior director of diversity, equity and inclusion, and a driving force in its hiring equality efforts.

In recent years, more women have moved into prominent positions throughout the league, with several rising to decision-making executive roles to redraw pro football’s hierarchy.

And it’s not just at the top. In front offices, personnel departments, coaching staffs, officiating crews, equipment and training rooms and on down to the sidelines, the league is finally beginning to mirror society as women get jobs that once went only to men.

This season, 223 women are working in full-time coaching or football operations roles in the NFL, a modest jump from 199 last year but a 141% gain since 2020. Ten women hold full-season coaching positions, the most in history, and 11 clubs had women in coaching roles during training camp this summer, another high.

According to the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, the overall percentage of women in the NFL’s league office was 41.3% in 2022, an all-time high and increase from 29.6% in 2014.

It’s taken time, but women, who make up more than half the U.S. population and nearly half the NFL’s fan base — roughly 80 million — are at last seeing more opportunities when it comes to hiring.

Rapoport spearheaded the first NFL Women’s Forum in 2017 with the goal of connecting female candidates to teams. It had always bothered her that women couldn’t pursue careers in a game they enjoyed.

“There were no women in coaching,” said Rapoport, who like Raîche grew up in Canada obsessed with football. “There were no women in scouting, and many of us looked around and said, ‘This has to change.’”

Determined to make a difference, Rapoport cornered Commissioner Roger Goodell at a youth flag football tournament he was hosting and pitched her dream of bridging the league’s gender gap — with the Women’s Forum at its core.

“In 2017, there were nine clubs, two owners, one head coach and no general managers” at the forum, she said. “Fast forward seven years now, and at this year’s program we had all 32 teams. We literally had standing room only.”

In the past few years, Rapaport has heard anecdotes of how women have improved pro football’s product. She said one general manager told her balancing his scouting operation with an equal number of men and women had a profound effect: It made the men better.

“It became more reflective of society and it allowed men to just do their jobs instead of just heavily competing against each other. I thought it was such an interesting observation because it really proves what considering the entire population does. It’s not just about bringing women in. When you consider everyone, everyone does better because you get better people in your office,” Rapaport said.

Although Raîche may be the top-ranking female employed by the Browns, she’s got plenty of company within the organization.

Co-owner Dee Haslam has been among the league’s most fervent supporters of female equality. The Browns have hired more candidates from the NFL’s Women’s Forum than any team, and a quick look at one of the team’s practices — with women working all over the field — underscores progress.

“There’s a lot of pluses about having females involved, but really it’s just that we hire the best people and they happen to be women,” Haslam said. “I came up in a generation where I had to fight for everything. It’s so nice to see that women don’t have to do that anymore.”

Thanks to women like Dawn Aponte, those barriers are easier to navigate.

“The godmother,” Rapoport said of Aponte. “We’re all standing on Dawn’s shoulders.”

Now the NFL’s chief football administrative officer, Aponte began in the NFL in the early 1990s, when women barely felt welcome and were often ignored or overlooked.

“There were no professional females at the New York Jets,” said Aponte, who began in the team’s accounting department.

Maybe naive, but full of ambition, Aponte was determined to climb the football side of New York’s organization. There were plenty of moments of failure and frustration, such as when she was asked to leave the team’s draft room after a Jets executive excused her by saying, “I don’t think she has anything to contribute here.”

Aponte pushed forward and persevered. She credits several male mentors, including Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells, who hired her in 2010 with Miami, for helping open doors once off limits to women in the NFL.

“They make the difference,” she said. “There’s only so much you can do. You want to be recognized for what you’re able to contribute, but those individuals give you the credibility.”

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski is following that lead. When he was hired by Cleveland, Stefanski’s initial addition was to make Callie Brownson his chief of staff. It was a role Stefanski had in Minnesota, and he felt an obligation to jump-start someone else’s career the same way.

In this case it was a woman, and Brownson has since been promoted to assistant coach.

“We’ve tried to be very intentional about including women in all areas of our organization because this is not just a boys’ game,” Stefanski said. “This is a kids’ game and that’s boys and girls. We want all the young girls that fall in love with the game to see examples of women on our coaching staff, on our personnel staff, maybe doing P.R., whatever it is, this is not something where we are exclusionary.”

Perhaps more than anyone, Aponte feels a personal sense of satisfaction at how different things are for women today. Her daughter, Madison, is a college scouting director with the Kansas City Chiefs.

At last year’s Super Bowl, things came full circle as she watched he daughter work with the defensive coaches on the practice field.

“That was a picture in my mind and a moment in time where I was like, ‘Wow, things have changed,’ where you could see that that would have never happened,” she said. “That wouldn’t have happened 10 years ago, quite frankly.”

How to watch Ravens vs. Chargers on Sunday Night Football in Week 12 https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/how-to-watch-ravens-vs-chargers-on-sunday-night-football-in-week-12/520091/ 520091 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/image-30-2.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Sunday Night Football in Week 12 features two teams trending in different directions as the Baltimore Ravens will visit the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Ravens are atop the AFC North at 8-3 after winning five of their last six. Baltimore most recently took down the divisional rival Cincinnati Bengals 34-20 on Thursday Night Football after Joe Burrow exited with a season-ending wrist injury.

While Baltimore looks like a real threat to the come out of the AFC, the same can’t be said for Los Angeles. The Chargers once again entered the season with high hopes but have failed to live up to them. After snapping a three-year playoff drought in 2022, Brandon Staley’s team has failed to surpass the .500 mark this season.

Los Angeles sits last place in the AFC West at 4-6 following two consecutive losses. And after the team’s latest defeat to the Green Bay Packers, Staley snapped at a reporter over a question about defensive play-calling responsibilities.

So, can the Chargers get their season back on track with a signature win in prime time? Or will the Ravens take another step toward an AFC North title?

Here’s how to watch the AFC showdown on SNF:

When is the Ravens vs. Chargers Week 12 game?

The Ravens and Chargers will meet on Sunday, Nov. 26.

What time does the Ravens vs. Chargers Week 12 game start?

Kickoff from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, is set for 8:20 p.m. ET/5:20 p.m. PT.

What TV channel is the Ravens vs. Chargers Week 12 game on?

NFL world dazed by Marquez Valdes-Scantling's vital drop in Chiefs-Eagles https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/nfl-world-dazed-by-marquez-valdes-scantlings-vital-drop-in-chiefs-eagles/520240/ 520240 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/GettyImages-1793808736-e1700548572162.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 It was a drop heard all throughout Kansas City.

From hands up in the air with excitement to hands behind their head with jaws dropped in a split second.

On a second-and-10 from the Chiefs’ 49-yard line with 1:50 to play, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes aired it out to a wide-open Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a potential game-winning moment. Instead, Valdes-Scantling saw it bounce off his chest and hit the floor as he simultaneously did the same.

The crowd was stunned into silence. Even if he had been just short, the Chiefs had four plays at the maximum to drive it home.

But they never got close to the end zone after that, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles 21-17 in a game full of drops.

Valdes-Scantling was seen on the broadcast frustrated as he headed to the locker room, slamming his helmet against the hallway.

Mahomes pinned it on himself after the game, saying he “could probably have thrown it a little bit shorter.”

Maybe he’s right, so Valdes-Scantling wouldn’t have had to leap for it. But Valdes-Scantling cradled it into his chest. He just couldn’t bring it all the way down. The 29-year-old had no catches on the night despite three targets.

Fellow receiver Justin Watson also had unfortunate drops, hauling in five catches off 11 targets. Star tight end Travis Kelce had a costly fumble in the red zone, too, the closest Kansas City got to scoring position-wise in the second half.

But the Valdes-Scantling drop had the NFL world dazed on social media. Here are some of the top reactions:

Chiefs fans ironically drop Patrick Mahomes' glove throw after Eagles game https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/chiefs-fans-ironically-drop-patrick-mahomes-glove-throw-after-eagles-game/520224/ 520224 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/USATSI_21945983-e1700544630714.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Drops have been haunting the Kansas City Chiefs all season — it seems to have spread to their fans.

The Chiefs lost a disappointing game to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football, falling short 21-17 after leading 17-7 at the half.

Perhaps the most obvious explanation was the number of drops. The lack of quality wideouts, especially a true WR1, has been an issue for the Chiefs since they traded Tyreek Hill last year, but nothing has been addressed still to aid Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes didn’t have his best game on Monday, but drops from receivers proved too tough to overcome. But the miscues didn’t stop there. As Mahomes departed for the locker room after the game, he threw his glove to Chiefs fans in the stands. A couple of them reached out for it, but it was dropped.

The camera panned away after it appeared Mahomes reached down for it to hand it back to a fan, but it was a prevalent theme inside GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Justin Watson hauled in just five catches on 11 targets, with a crucial drop on fourth-and-25 icing the cake in what would’ve been a colossal first down.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling had zero catches on three targets, most notably dropping a would-be go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Even star tight end Travis Kelce had a costly fumble in the red zone.

In the end, Mahomes completed just 24 of 43 passes for 177 yards, two touchdowns and one pick for a passer rating of 71.6. His numbers would’ve been much better if not for significant drops, but the Chiefs will just have to pick themselves up and hope to improve in that regard for the rest of the season.

5 winners, losers from Eagles' 21-17 win vs. Chiefs on Monday Night Football https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/5-winners-losers-from-eagles-21-17-win-vs-chiefs-on-monday-night-football/520125/ 520125 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/GettyImages-1805098111-e1700541013633.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 They didn’t get an immediate trophy for it, but the Philadelphia Eagles got their revenge in the Super Bowl LVII rematch on Monday Night Football.

Philadelphia made a second-half comeback to top the Kansas City Chiefs 21-17, improving their NFL-best record to 9-1.

The Chiefs fell to 7-3 after completely stumbling on offense in the second half. Patrick Mahomes’ receiving core had been in question all season and it predictably came into play in a big game. Two plays in particular stood out: Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s potential game-winning touchdown drop and Justin Watson’s fourth-down drop.

Jalen Hurts had a perplexing slow first four-and-a-half quarters before he found some rhythm late and delivered imperative throws, namely to DeVonta Smith. It proved a stark difference to the Chiefs, who just didn’t have that go-to guy despite a solid showing from the defense.

Let’s analyze the game further with five winners and losers:

Winner: D’Andre Swift, Eagles

Hurts didn’t get going until the fourth quarter, but an Eagles rushing attack that has been subpar got a lift. D’Andre Swift picked up several chunk plays to give his team a boost, ending the game with 76 rushing yards on 12 carries and a touchdown while collecting 31 receiving yards on three catches.

DeVonta Smith deserves a nod for his clutch catches down the stretch, but it was Swift who made plays on a more consistent basis. A.J. Brown, meanwhile, was held to just one catch for eight yards in what was easily his worst individual outing of the season.

Loser: Travis Kelce, Chiefs

Big games are defined by the moments. The two aforementioned drops by Kansas City’s receivers were huge, but its star tight end made a play just as costly. The Chiefs were on the way to scoring on a 12-play, 65-yard drive until Kelce fumbled a pass in the red zone thanks to Bradley Roby’s peanut punch.

Your star players have to deliver when things appear bleak, but Kelce did not deliver in that regard in this one. He had seven catches for 44 yards and a touchdown, but the Eagles would score on their second possession after this mistake while the Chiefs never got that close to the end zone again. The moments matter.

Winner: Chiefs’ pass rush

Part of the reason why it took so long for Hurts to get going was Kansas City’s pass rush getting home at key times. The Chiefs sacked Hurts five times for a loss of 26 yards, with Chris Jones and Trent McDuffie logging two each and George Karlaftis the other.

The secondary also thrived in large part to the pass rush, but it wasn’t exactly a coincidence that the game-winning touchdown drive came on a drive that lacked pressure on Hurts. Still, the Chiefs know they have a backbone on defense in tight games like this. That hasn’t always been the case.

Loser: Chiefs’ second-half offense

The Chiefs came into the game averaging the fewest points in the second half in the NFL. That number dipped yet again on Monday. Up 17-7 at the half, Kansas City’s second-half possessions ended in the following: punt, punt, fumble, punt, punt, turnover on downs. They haven’t scored a second-half touchdown since Oct. 22.

The defense did its job, but the offense that was once the mainstay of the franchise has looked a shell of itself in 2023. Watson had just five catches on 11 targets while Valdes-Scantling had none on three.

Winner: Jason Kelce, Eagles

Previously 0-3 against his younger brother, Travis, Eagles offensive lineman Jason Kelce finally picked up his first win.

The two also met up on the field after the game, with Travis saying it was a late birthday present for Jason, who was born on Nov. 5.

Jason will hope that if they meet again this season, it will end in him winning the ultimate prize this time around.

How to watch 49ers-Seahawks Week 12 NFL game live online, on TV https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/how-to-watch-49ers-seahawks-week-12-nfl-game-live-online-on-tv/520089/ 520089 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/GettyImages-1449985435-e1700522180379.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,188 Thanks to help from the Los Angeles Rams, the San Francisco 49ers have a prime opportunity to create some separation in the NFC West.

With the Seahawks losing on a last-second field goal in Los Angeles and the 49ers topping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home, San Francisco can claim a two-game advantage over its divisional foes in Week 12.

But that game is rapidly approaching, as the 49ers will take part in one of the three games on Thanksgiving: Thursday Night Football.

The 49ers will be on the road in Seattle, a place they won 21-13 last season with Brock Purdy starting. So he’ll be familiar with the atmosphere in what’s expected to be a heated affair after the Seahawks dropped to 6-4.

Here’s everything to know to catch the Week 12 divisional contest under the lights:

When is the 49ers vs. Seahawks Week 12 game?

The 49ers and Seahawks will meet on Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 24.

What time is the 49ers vs. Seahawks Week 12 game?

Kick-off time from Lumen Field in Seattle is slated for 5:20 p.m. PT/8:20 p.m. ET.

How to watch the 49ers vs. Seahawks Week 12 game

49ers-Seahawks will air on NBC.

What is the weather forecast for the 49ers-Seahawks Week 12 game?

It’s expected to be a cold day for Thanksgiving football. NBC Bay Area is predicting a high of 47 degrees in Seattle, with early morning clouds that will become clear skies by night time. Winds will be five to 10 mph.

5 key players to watch in 49ers-Seahawks Thanksgiving game

QB Brock Purdy, 49ers: Purdy posted a rare complete passer rating in franchise history versus Tampa Bay, so he’ll be expected to continue that momentum against a tougher secondary in Seattle. He passed the test with flying colors last year, but the Seahawks have improved on the margins in that regard.

QB Geno Smith, Seahawks: Smith is dealing with an elbow injury he suffered versus Los Angeles. Head coach Pete Carroll anticipates Smith will be fine, but the 49ers will need to make him feel uncomfortable and prevent him from finding his rhythm to improve their chances.

S Ji’Ayir Brown, 49ers: With starting safety Talanoa Hufanga out for the season with a torn ACL, rookie Ji’Ayir Brown will need to step up and play at a high level. He excelled with several standout plays against Tampa Bay, most notably getting a pick in the end zone, but Seattle will definitely target him to test his abilities.

DE Leonard Williams, Seahawks: Boye Mafe leads the team in sacks with seven, but the Seahawks are looking for a breakout game from their big trade deadline acquisition. Williams has one sack in three games with his new team. Can he shine under the lights and pressure Purdy?

DE Chase Young, 49ers: Young is getting more and more comfortable with the defense, logging half a sack versus Jacksonville and a full sack last time out. Can he continue his steady ascension and get home on Smith multiple times? It’d be quite the statement if he could.

Who holds the NFL's all-time record for QB rushing yards? https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nfl/who-holds-the-nfls-all-time-record-for-qb-rushing-yards/519538/ 519538 post https://media.nbcsportschicago.com/2023/11/rsz_vick-lamar-newton-getty-111723.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Get you a quarterback who can do both.

Lamar Jackson continued to climb historical ladders after his robust all-around performance helped the Baltimore Ravens beat the Cincinnati Bengals 34-20 on Thursday Night Football in Week 11.

Jackson completed 16 of 26 passes for 264 yards, two touchdowns and no picks, but he made a significant achievement in the ground game. His 54 rushing yards on nine carries saw him jump to fourth among the NFL’s all-time QB rushing leaders, surpassing Philadelphia Eagles legend Randall Cunningham.

But Jackson still has a decent amount of yards to go to become No. 1 all time. Here’s everything to know about QB rushing statistics in the NFL:

Who holds the NFL all-time record for QB rushing yards?

The all-time record for QB rushing yards in the NFL belongs to Michael Vick. Vick, whose career spanned 13 years with the Atlanta Falcons, Eagles, New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers, rushed for 6,109 yards on 873 attempts (7.0 per carry). Here’s a look at the top 10 (bold denotes QB is active):

  1. Michael Vick: 6,109 yards on 873 attempts (7.0 per carry), 36 rush touchdowns
  2. Cam Newton: 5,628 yards on 1,118 attempts (5.0 per carry), 75 rush touchdowns
  3. Russell Wilson (Denver Broncos): 5,198 yards on 943 attempts (5.5 per carry), 26 rush touchdowns
  4. Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens): 4,972 yards on 828 attempts (6.0 per carry), 29 rush touchdowns
  5. Randall Cunningham: 4,928 yards on 775 attempts (6.4 per carry), 35 rush touchdowns
  6. Steve Young: 4,239 yards on 722 attempts (5.9 per carry), 43 rush touchdowns
  7. Fran Tarkenton: 3,674 yards on 675 attempts (5.4 per carry), 32 rush touchdowns
  8. Steve McNair: 3,590 yards on 669 attempts (5.4 per carry), 37 rush touchdowns
  9. Aaron Rodgers (New York Jets): 3,466 yards on 719 attempts (4.8 per carry), 35 rush touchdowns
  10. Donovan McNabb: 3,459 yards on 616 attempts (5.6 per carry), 29 rush touchdowns

John Elway, Josh Allen (currently with the Buffalo Bills) and Tobin Rote are the only other quarterbacks above the 3,000-yard mark.

Which NFL QB has the most rushing yards in a season?

Jackson made history in 2019 when he rushed for 1,206 yards, breaking Michael Vick’s record of most rushing yards by a QB in a single season. Vick logged 1,039 yards with the Falcons in 2006.

Jackson hit his mark on 176 carries, averaging 6.9 yards per rush and adding seven touchdowns. Vick, for comparison’s sake, did so on 123 carries, averaging 8.4 yards per attempt with two touchdowns.

The achievement played in a role in Jackson winning NFL MVP that year, which was just his second season in the league.

Who has the most rushing yards as an active quarterback?

The active NFL quarterback with the most rushing yards is Russell Wilson. He has recorded 5,198 rushing yards during his 12-year career thus far, spending 10 years with the Seattle Seahawks and two currently with the Denver Broncos.

Wilson, 34, has logged 943 attempts and counting, averaging 5.5 yards a carry with 26 rushing touchdowns.

Which NFL QB has the most rushing yards in 2023?

Through 11 weeks, Lamar Jackson is the QB with the most rushing yards in 2023. The Ravens star has logged 535 yards and counting on 101 carries (5.3 yards per run) and five rushing touchdowns.

Next would be Joshua Dobbs, who has suited up for both the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings this year. Dobbs has 389 rush yards and counting on 70 carries (5.6 yards per run) and six rushing touchdowns.
